Calling all DIY vinyl stripe installers!!

Hey all you guys that installed your own precut vinyl stripe kits- I just received my BSM 10" kit and I've read about all the threads/posts I can find. Hopefully I can start installation tomorrow!!

Do any of you have any advice or pointers that you would do differently now that you've done it once???

Thanks,

Tom

Take your time and have fun with the front bumper.

It is not that bad, just be patient. Took me two days to do mine, did the hood and roof in one day, then finished up the back the next.

Same here. I did the flat surfaces the first day and worked on the bumbers the second day. Take your time and keep them really wet until you have them in place.

Did you use tape to center your kit? My understanding is that the BSM kit has a 2" gap; but the instructions on their site says to use 1.5" tape and place the stripes about .25" away. I don't understand why they don't recommend using 2" tape and aligning the stripes up against the tape.

I did the 1.5" tape like they recommended. One problem that I had was I used blue painters tape and when it got wet it lost its adhesion. If I do it again I will get some tape that won't move when it gets wet.

wow i might have to get those

much cheaper than spending a grand on stripes lol and they get the bumpers and spolier too.

1 question is it possible to take them off without damaging the paint?
and do they stick up off the paint noticably? i dont wanna look like rice

i used 1" tape and butted it together. ran the whole car. 1" was easier to deal with the bends. also i cleaned the crap out of the car with naptha first to remove the was. home depot, lowes or osh should have it. detailers use it to remove wax. washed it about 6 times first. stipes have been on now for over a year.

Make sure you have someone there to help with the hood and roof, The hardest part of the install was the front bumper, allow you self a few hours of time just for that part alone, you will need a heat gun/or hairdrier to help with the install. Follow BSM's instructions and take your time you will be fine.

I'll echo what other people said. I used the 1.5" tape and spaced the stripes off of it. If you use 2" tape, it will be difficult to keep the edges from overlaping the tape. Also, do it on a warm day when the vinyl is flexible. Finally, it will take a while for any small air bubbles to work themselves out (a month or two), so don't be impatient.

Thanks guys. I've started on my side stripes; got one side done, and I'm getting ready now to head back out and do the other side.

I'm going to install side stripes soon. What measurements did you use for your side stripes?

I also have the BSM pre-cut kit, but planning on going 1". I'm having to recut the rear cutouts to adapt for the smaller spacing. (very nervous I'm going to screw up) I'm preparing to do the install over the Memorial Day 3-day weekend. Glad this thread got started in time!

Ok, got both side stripes installed. My stripes are from BSM too, only I had my own lettering cut into it. They say "S197 GT" to match my license plate. I originally ordered a side kit that said "G.T. 350" but I decided against putting it on. Side note: that kit (in slate metallic color) is now for sale.........

I'm happy with how it turned out. If it ever stops raining here, I'll take pix and post them. For now, I probably won't start on the main body kit until next weekend, 'cause I'll be traveling alot this week for work.

Thanks to all,

Tom

Here's a decent pic from inside my garage. It's been raining since Wednesday and its supposed to keep it up past Tuesday (!) so I nice pic outside will have to wait.

Thanks.

I got one of their kits from an ebay auction about a week ago, still debating on whether or not I want to install or get professional to install...
