Bye bye vinyl, Hello paint!

Well my vinyl stripe experiment failed. It wasn't BSM's fault. It was the fault of the installer. I have had my stripes for a month or so now and each day it seemed like I found another corner coming up or a bubble where there wansn't a bubble before. I figured they would just lay down eventually. Then I find out that 3M (see other post) quit making the same color silver. The other day I noticed where the installer cut and spliced several of the BSM pre cut pieces. I have no idea why they would have done that. There appeared to be no reason for the splice job. Anyway.........since the Shelby front end install is beginning Monday, I decided to peel the vinyl off and have the stripes painted on. I should have done this to begin with. I'm really only out the cost of the BSM kit. My installer charged me next to nothing and the end result reflected that. Oh well. Hopefully I'll have some pics to post soon of the Shelby front end and freshly painted stripes. Til then.

When you take the sripes off is there any damage to the paint? I am hoping to put some on mine but wondered what would happen to the paint if you had to take them off.

No damage. It just peels off. Best done in the sun.

This sounds like a nightmare. A buddy of mine had it painted in Germany. It looks great. It shines so bright... Unbelievable. No comparison to the 3M stuff.

My 3M vinyl basically peeled itself off. It had only been on a month. It was incredibly easy to remove. Didn't even leave any residue.

You will be much happier with painted stripes.

sounds to me like the guy didn't remove the wax from your car before applying the stripes. Either that or he used a very strong windex/water solution to install them wet, which takes a good month in extreme heat to get the stripes to stick properly.

Anyway, sounds like the installer had no idea what he was doing,.

When you see the final result of the painted stripes, you'll wonder why you ever went with the vinyl in the first place. Painted stripes, while much more expensive, and comprehensive, are WELL WORTH IT!!!

Yeah that whole deal was unfortunate. I am still at a loss as to why a professional shop would think they had to cut it up. The way 3M sprung everything on us was a little, well, unprofessional as well. The only upside to the whole affair is the new 3M vinyl...... the new stuff looks much more like paint than the old.

I saw a an 05 or 06 in Oklahoma City a few weeks ago w/ 3M's new vinyl. I will have to day it is night and day difference. The new stuff looks a lot better for thouse of you debating on whether or not to go with vinyl stripes.
