Brake caliper painting technique question

OK, I have the kit and am ready to do it. My question is whether there are any problems with doing one caliper at a time, rather than all four at once? I don't think I can get the GT up on four jackstands in my garage or driveway. I know I can get one wheel up and get one jackstand in place safely because I have done that a number of times.

I can't see a problem with just painting one caliper, or maybe the back two, then closing up the can with the remaining paint, cleaning the brush, and doing the front calipers the next day. I could also check the rears for needing any touch-ups that morning.

Any problems with doing it this way, other than taking a little longer?

Shouldn't be a problem at all. Just make sure you put some clearcoat on after paint or they will chip like mad.

If it's the G2 kit your talking about , I think once you mix the two parts together you only have about 6 hrs. I not sure if closing the can will do ?

I used the Duplicolor caliper kit, and bought some spray clearcoat for afterwards. It turned out great. I have no experience with the G2 kit, if that's what you are using.

6 hours? thats plenty of time to do all of them and clean the insides of each wheel. You can re-mount the wheels right away as long as you are not doing the rotor hats, just don't drive it until dry. I'm doing mine soon, only in silver(just don't want them to get grungy looking). You would think they would offer a gunmetal color considering how many wheels are going that way now.

Thanks guys. I actually have the Duplicolor kit, so I think I am on the right track.

The clearcoat sounds like a good idea, but will it take the heat?

The clearcoat should take the heat like your inner femders and under the hood paint does. The kits should also come with high heat paint anyway.

I used red Duplicolor and did one wheel at a time using the factory jack and a jackstand. Turned out great. BTW after you let the paint brush dry with even a little paint on it, it will turn hard as a rock.

You can probably get a set of basic art brushes for $5 over using the acid brushes they give you. I think home depot carries the 'nicer' acid brushes right next to the black nylon ones with at least softer bristles.

I just cleaned the caliper with brake cleaner and a brush, then i just sprayed the paint. no chipping no problem. only problem is that brake dust and dirt eventually dull out the color. Next time im just making them black.

I used the duplicolor kit as well and you do not need to clearcoat after. I have 1 chip in the passenger rear caliper after 40,000km on it. i didn't use the brush that came with it. I went to Walmart and bought a brush kit for $4.00 that had 5 different sizes in it.

duplicolor 2 part caliper paint

If you only mix half at a time and do two wheels at a time, and keep the container tightly closed, paint should be alright as long as you don't add hardner.

OK, I'm going to go for it this weekend. I am doing mine in black since the car is Satin Silver. I also will get a couple of extra brushes.

Some of these mods may seem trivial, but when you are working on your baby, you don't want anything to go wrong. That's why I ask a lot of questions.

I used the DupliColor kit, and it is not a 2 part mix like G2... I still have half a can of red left over and I put the lid back on real tight, and it's still good. No clearcoat, no chips. Easiest/Cheapest mod I've done yet.

**EDIT**Some more helpful tips... The paint sets up and gets tacky really quickly, so If you jack up one end of the car at a time you can put a base coat one caliper, move to the other caliper for a base coat, then back to caliper 1 for a second coat, and then caliper 2. If you paint when its too tacky it leaves brush marks (and pulls hairs from the cheap brushes).

I used the Duplicolor kit, and used a high temperature engine block clearcoat over it from Advanced Auto.

http://forums.bradbarnett.net/attach...1&d=1180462017Well, the Duplicolor kit worked as advertised. It took me a little longer than I thought, but I did follow the instructions to the letter and let each coat dry about 20 min. then touched it up. I let the whole job dry over night, and it looks good. Of course, it doesn't show up really well with my factory wheels on. And the color black was chosen to go with the car's Satin Silver. I could have gone with red, but this was fine with me. I want the car to look "Stock, like stock should have been from the factory".

looks good! I ordered my kit and I am going with red. It will complement my red stripes nicely I think.

Rob, I think the best thing you can do is to read and follow the instructions to the letter, and take your time. I hate doing stuff like this for the first time on my car. The possibility for screwing up kept me from trying it for a while. But, luckily everything worked out OK.
