Billet gas door question, do it or not, problems?

I originally did not like the look of the billet gas door, but it has grown on me. However, I do have some questions for those of you who have done this mod. Is SHR the best quality door out there? Did you have any install or long term issues with it? Lastly, I have the Shelby style billet hood pins. They are a brushed aluminum. However, I have the polished aluminum rims. If I go with the SHR door, they list three models including the satin bright anodized, which I am assuming from the site is the one that looks like brushed aluminum. Then they have another listed as polished clear anodized. Is this similar to my polished aluminum rims? Lastly there is the chrome one. It is hard to tell from the site which picture is which door. Any recommendations either way on this purchase?

My girl just found my fuel door open a minute ago, now I'm thinking of getting one myself thats locking or at the very least a locking gas cap.

i have only had experience with shr's product, but i can say that the quality is excellent. also, since saleen uses shr to supply their fuel doors, i think that speaks for itself. i found a link that shows a pic of the difference between the satin and polished. click here

the only thing you have to worry about the chrome door... from ANY supplier, is that it is harder to upkeep... but basically you just should try to always keep it clean.

don't forget that you can special order from them and mix and match the outer "ring" (don't know what it is called) and door. i don't have the fuel door, but i have the rear medallion with a chrome outer ring and black door.

Excellent link, thanks. Looks like the polished would be the way to go for me. Although, I would love to see painted ones offered as well just like the Midwest mirror covers.

I went with the one from FRPP/Ford and have had no problems with it. Blends in rather well with my Vapor GT.

Is the Ford one perhaps made by SHR or more likely Steeda? I noticed in my Ford Racing catalog the billet door looks a lot like the Steeda brushed aluminum door.

If I had a black car, I would definitely do the black one. It will look great.

No problems with fit or finish.
SHR makes high quality stuff.
And you are right to match the door to your rims.
That it what the eye is going to compare it to.
If it doesn't match it will look way out of place.

FYI,

We currently produce fuel doors for Saleen on their "halo" models (PJ, Dan Gurney, Dark Horse, Heritage SE). Steeda sells our door, as well as making one of their own now that retails for a little less than ours. FRPP currently sells one of unknown origin, as we don't make it, and I know Steeda does not make it for them either because it is a different process. There are also a couple other brands out there, but I can't speak to their source or quality.

A good comparison of the quality of the components can be seen here - no b.s., just phots taken at a show one day where we were in attendance with some of our competitors:

I recommend the polished finish over the chrome for ease of maintenance. The chrome really is beautiful, but it is a bear to maintain, as there are no less than six metals all in that little area - lots of chances for electrolysis even if it's properly cared for. On my own personal car I could have any finish I want, and I run the polished.

Would you agree that the polished one would most closely match my polished Ford aluminum rims?

Not sure who makes the Ford fuel door. One of the reasons I got it was that it looks exactly like the stock fuel door on my 2001 Bullitt. I also like the fact that it does match my wheels and blends in well with my Vapor paint.

Yes, and since it is clear anodized, it will hold up long term very well for you. Everything else with the exception of the strike plate and magnets are stainless, so it's pretty much an install and forget mod.
