I drive an 86 Mustang hatch now, and my 7' 8" fits inside perfectly with the front passenger seat folded forward. I'm thinking about trading up to a 2005, but if I can't transport my board, that's kind of a deal-breaker for me. Unfortunately, I live in an apartment, so there's simply no way I can have two cars (really bad parking here). So I was wondering what's the largest board people have been able to snake through the trunk of a 2005.

You might wanna ask SurfnSoCal. He surfs everyday. He went from a vert, to a hardtop 05. Said the boards ruined his interior in his vert.

From what I understand he is looking for some kind of roof rack...

Surfing = :nono:

jman,
Aloha Bro! I surf a lot, and I own an 03 coupe. I now have removable hard racks, but I was able to fit a 7'8 funshape board with the passenger seat forward and both back seats down. UNFORTUNATELY, the opening from the trunk to the back seat has a hump that reduces the size of the opening about 25%. I just got a new 6' 6 yancy spencer shape (picture attached) that a buddy of mine shaped for me and after i went to pick it up, I stopped by mike davidson ford, and i couldn't fit it in the car. So its either leave the trunk open and let it all hang out the back end...which makes you eat exhaust fumes at slow speeds, or get the vert like i am ordering this week.
good luck

dave_bought_another_black_stang,

I saw your post in another thread regarding the roof rack. I seem to recall you saying that there will be a 5mpg drop in economy. That's not very appealing to me, and I don't want to have to bother taking off and reinstalling it on a weekly basis. Frankly, I think it would be easier to just remove the fins from the board and slip it into the car. That might work. Also, my friend has an '02 maxima, and she can't get her 7'10" inside with the front seat tilted forward, but if she slides it forward all the way, and then fully reclines it, she can get the board in. Has anyone tried that with the stang?

I was able to fit 2 boards into my 98 by folding the back seats down andpushing the front passenger seat back so that you can angle it from drivers side rear to the passenger front, also allows for longer boards and I still was able have a passenger that way.

All I can say is take your board to the dealership and give it a try, i couldn't get an 6 ' 6" board any way i tried!
PS, those aren't his and hers, a buddy of mine just blended the pic to show the top and bottom..........it even has my name on it!
Soft Racks are the other option Jman. As long as you aren't going above 50, soft racks do ok for a 7' 8 board! Dakine makes some good ones!

I have surfed there once. It was nice. One of my better spring breaks. Not much surfing at all in Pittsburgh. I still have my board though.

I miss the beach

WTF?

Here in SoCal, almost everyone surfs who lives within 5 miles of the beach. In my town, we have a varsity surfing team at the High School, as well as surfing for P.E. Kids start surfing at 3, and my friend's grandpas still surf (70+).

Here's me in front of my house. My mom took this picture sitting in her bed. lol:

Anyway...

yeah, I was looking for a solution too. Keep your board in a sock/board bag and put it in the trunk. It'll fit. I plan on putting subs in my trunk, so I am looking for a roof solution. On my vert, my leather seats got ruined...even with my board in a sock.

That is a great pic SoCal! Unfortunately the waves usually do stink here! this past year with all of the hurricanes was awesome....this pic is after i jumped off of a local pier during hurricane charlie! the board i am on, was a 7'8 that i pulled out of the back of my stang before i got racks. I tried to fit a smaller board in the 05, and it DID NOT FIT and the reason is b/c of the smaller opening in the new stang. I am not just theorizing. Anyway, I was born in San Diego SoCal, so I am very jealous of the waves you guys get! Anyway, let me know if you come up with a non rack solution, I am contemplating getting the hard top and getting a jeep for a beach vehicle.
PEACE!!!!
Dave
