2010 Style Taillamps for 05-09!!!
With so much retro stylng going on with the Mustang and a few other cars, they are staying pure to the way they were configured back in the day with all red lenses. And now Ford's famous sequential turn signal action has made a comeback on modern Mustangs, so there is much less of a desire now to have a seperate amber turn signal. Also, cars like the Thunderbird have never been characterized by amber turn lamps so we will not likely ever see them as part of styling DNA unless they are forced by federal motor vehicle standards. Even with that they will continue to work around it using clear lenses and amber bulbs.
However, I understand the appeal the amber lenses have to some people.. Maybe because they look different than the norm.
When I had my 1989 Camaro convertible, I went to the trouble to get Euro spec taillamps which switched the amber turn lens from the middle to the outer section. It was kinda cool that I installed red bulbs with a seperate bulb and socket so it would light up red from the outer and center sections at night but once you hit the turn signals it was lit distinctively amber in a kind of "switchback style".
When I had my 1985 Thunderbird, I took the back-up lights next to the license plate and configured the bulbs and wiring so that I had amber turn lamps from the back-up light section. My back-up lamps were still functional as I installed a second socket and clear bulb in the backup lamp housing. I later abandoned that setup when I took apart my taillamp lenses and painted the inner lens so that it would yield three circles like the 87-88 Tbirds.
2010 style taillamps also available smoked
Here they are smoked... They look good too! It's really hard to decide which I like best, but I have the red ones on the way.
They look badassed smoked along with the blackedout decklid cove.

For me the unattractive part of the 2010 taillamps is the manic irregular shape of the taillamp outline and strange kink bisecting the center and inner parts of the lens, not the nicely detailed and more separated sections behind the lens. And if anyone paid attention, the vertical backup lamps pick up the related black detail in the dividing bars of the 1964 1/2-66 Mustang taillamp bezels and well as the shapes in chrome behind the red lens. It looks to me as if an enlarged version of this chrome taillamp bezel was placed behind a clear red lens.

The 1969 taillamp is an interesting form with the bezel off and could very well be another source of inspiration...

I'm with you all the way on your crits of the 2010 lamp. I still would rather a Bezel like the old stayle was instead of the solid piece of red or the vert divisions using the backuplamps..but if I had to take one it would be solid red. I actually like the way it was done on the 1999+ cars with the kicked out part on the inside of each segment. Subtle yet distinct. LIke i said though glad you are happy with the. Makes your car unique.
You know the chrome trim I had on my original taillamps will actually fit on these new ones. The vertical bars bisect the middle of the backup lamps leaving plenty of clear lens on each side to be functional. That would be a different look for someone to try, though I really don't want to do it for myself.
Anyway, there is no wrong or right... I am kind of amused at the universal hate because this means I have done something right. I am getting a lot of positive feedback in other circles and in real life. It's about everyone's personal taste in details and I am in fact happy with my choice. These new taillamps have a richer darker ruby color in the lens making the light look nicer shining through and much less orange-red than the factory lamps. That was a nice surprise because I always liked the more ruby light color that some vehicles have.
