Along with rowing through the gears, I like the sounds of a manual. The slight drag on the motor as you let the gas out and the throttle blips as you downshift and while you are sitting at a red light.

It's called a GT500.... for you retrominded folks that would be 1967+ and there definitely WERE automatics behind the 427/428/428CJs.

Guys, go to www.svt.ford.com and let the intro load with the new GT500 and listen to the soundclip. Its definitely a drive-by with an automatic trans. You can hear it kick down to 2nd and then chirp 3rd gear with a sound that is clearly an auto trans. Maybe they're experimenting with both choices.
That particular sound clip is a stock effect which has been offered on a professional sound effects library for years. If I recall the track list correctly, it is a Cobra, but not the new one.

there is no bigger thrill than running thru the gears on my 4-sp KR!
an auto would be nothing short of boring!, and they were an option in 67/68

I guess I grew up with the notion that automatics were for girls and your mother to drive
sorry

Has anybody thought that maybe..just maybe, Ford doesn't have a slushbox capable of withstanding the hp/torque of the 5.4L.

Heck, that excuse seems to work for......I'll stop right there

Say what you want, but saying it in such a chauvanistic and condecending matter will get you flamed. Automatics are for girls and mothers? Com' on! Girls can shift and not all guys like stick shifts. Besides the newer autos are pretty slick (ask Ferarri).

Personally I like the newer manual trannys and clutches, they are much smoother. The old ones were a pain in the leg...I do my work outs at the gym using both legs.

To whoever says that the GT500 should only be offered with a manual tranny, here it's my opinion:
- why not offer an auto w/manual capability in it ? More options means more people can have the car tailored to suit their liking...I am ALWAYS in favor of more options for all cars...
- there are tons of really good, actually awesome sport cars out there that have auto w/manual...Ferrari, BMW with the M3 and M5, Porsche, Audi, Mercedes, even Chrysler and Dodge, and so on...if they can do it and in a succesful way, Ford ought to be able to do as good...

After all it's the 21st century and what could be better than a gorgeous GT500 (stunning retro looks, brilliant v8 engine) with state of the art tecnology as well as far as the tranny goes ?
No need to put it as the standard box in there, just offer it as an option so that people can decide wether they want it or not and it wouldn't affect the base price, keeping it more affordable for all potential buyers that don't want to spend the extra money for such a tranny.

Personally, I would love to see something like the SMG-II of the M5 in there...

If Shelby is right and Ford couldn't justify a $5000 price tag for IRS, I don't think they would spring for SMG. In fantasy land they might offer it all as an option, along with the side scoops from the 2005 concept.

It's all about the base price. They needed to keep it at 40k or a bit under ? Sure, no IRS then. But what would be the problem offering IRS or SMG or anything else as an option ? Ford would still make a profit on the option itself and perhaps catch a few more customers that are more tech minded...
I myself believe as well they won't offer any of this, but it's such a shame because I frankly see no reason not to.
This GT500 or SVT Cobra or whatever name it will have, should be the flagship for Ford as far as relatively affordable sport cars go (as the Ford GT is out of reach of probably 99 % of the people...141k...)...and when I say flagship, I mean it should offer the possibility to have something a bit more then (gorgeous) retro look and a monster of an engine...

Reality Check....it's 2005!
An automatic is not just for "girls" or "handicap drivers." I've had a 4 speed Falcon Sprint convertible, a 5 speed 5.0 Mustang, and a 5 speed SHO (and several other manual tranny cars). Automatics are available in Corvettes, BMWs and just about everything else. The purist and/or macho thing is absurd.

Automatics are just as fast, easier to launch, and more consistent. I will admit for driving pleasure a manual offers more control, and I feel more connected. But for the other 65% of the time I prefer an automatic.

hey, no problem. For the first time since 1980 I don't have a manual transmission in at least one car. My next will probably be a manual again, but I like having an automatic around too. Choice is good!

Ford is either stupid or arrogant in not offering a A/T; the early Shelby Mustangs had A/T available, and it doesn't appear to be a problem for Chrysler/Dodge SRT products- they can ONLY be had with A/T (except the Viper).
Actually only offering a performance car in an automatic is ignorant.

Has an auto ever been offered in a Cobra, I don't remember that it has. But the GT500 is not a Cobra, so who knows.

what are you trying to say? ignorance is just showing a lack of knowledge; I'm not defending Chrysler, but they probably realize that more A/Ts are sold than manuals...it just expands the market for your vehicles.

Yeah...put something (even remotely) similar to the new BMW M5's 7 speed SMG-II in the GT500 and let's see how many manuals they can still sell...

If that were the only tranny offered, I probably would not buy it. I'm sure it is a nice tranny, but, I like traditional clutches.

I don't see what the harm is in offering it for one year to see if it sells. Besides, with GM having all the problems in the world right now offering the Shelby Cobra with an automatic and taking some vette buyers from the GM market would be another nail in GM's coffin. I think it would be good business.
