Those pictures again clear it up for me. That ducktail looks like craaap!!!

While it's better than the ultra-generic spoiler on the GTs, I still think the Stang would have been a bit better with an "in-the-metal" ducktail ala the '69-'70 fastback, none of this after the fact tack-on stuff. Apparently, there was all sorts of "discussion" during the S-197 development on whether to have a ducktail -- guess which camp won.

I always thought they should have had both an in-the-metal ducktail and also a bit of "hip" in the beltline contour as I think those stylistic items are nearly as icon Mustang as the side scalloping and would distinguish the Stang a bit more from the generic single swoop beltline design found on just about 99% of any new car nowadays. Perhaps with such well-integrated and very iconic Mustang stylings, people might not have such a lemming-like urge to festoon every surface with some goofy, adolescent scoop or spoiler to look "bad azz" or "unigue," just like everybody else with tack on schmaltz.
