I went to Valley Ford in Florissant, Missouri this evening. No '05s, like most area dealers. Most say their cars are sold in a matter of hours. Anyway this salesman seemed to be quite a Mustang fanatic and brought up the subject of the '07 Cobra. He did say that it would be an '07, introduced in late '06. He says it is featured in a Ford training video that he and others were able to view. He described the one he saw as yellow with an unpainted carbon-fiber hood with twin reverse scoops like on the '04 Cobra, except the scoops were larger and "more masculine", whatever that means. He said it had a supercharged 5.4 with 500 hp, used some components from the 2000 R Model (wasn't specific), and was designed to compete with Corvettes. He also mentioned that designers were having a difficult time coming up with an IRS that could handle the horsepower. Does this guy know what he's talking about, or is he just describing the GTR? An interesting conversation either way. Just thought I'd share it with ya. And yes, ...Useless Without Pics!

Everthing he told you sounds plausable, but who knows whether he really as some inside info or is just BSing you.

Although late in the year (September) is the normal intoduction date. Past rumors have said that Cobra development is virtually done and intro date would be mid - 2006, like when the 2003 Cobra came out in June 2002. Development has to be mostly completed a long time before production starts. So again

It sounds like he's describing the GTR to you. But on the other hand...if you look at the hood, it only seems to have one reverse hood scoop... who knows?

To my knowledge the GTR's 5.0 Cammer engine, tuned for 440hp, doesn't equal the 5.4 making 500hp that the salesman said the Cobra would have. Somehow I doubt he was confusing it with the GTR.

Exactly, GT-R is 5.0, N/A, 440hp, live axle. I can't say whether or not the salesman has a clue, but, it isn't confused with a GT-R.

The salesguy seemed to know what he was talking about, except he couldn't come up with the term "carbon-fiber". He was talking about a charcoal mesh hood that wasn't painted, but showed a weave texture. He said no pricing was discussed, of course, but it seems to me that something that competes with vettes would be priced with vettes. Pretty cool, but it would price the Cobra out of many wallets out there. Of course, BS is what salesmen do. I don't necessarily believe what he says, but I thought it was certainly interesting.
BTW, he mentioned that there was no test driving of Mustangs allowed unless you were actually purchasing one, and brochures were being sold for $4 each! No freebies!

Not necessarily. Look at the improvements in the '05 GT and no price increase. I would expect an increase, but, not a big one. a mustang at corvette price probably won't sell well. I'd buy it because I'm a die hard Mustang fan, but, a lot of on the fence people would go Corvette if the money is the same. That is, I'll buy it if it doesn't look like everything aftermarket I have seen so far.

We've seen over the last 12-14 months that salesmen are the WORST source for information. I would say everything he stated is pure speculation, and nothing more. 500HP in a Cobra will (in my humble opinion) put the car out of reach of the intended audience price wise. 400HP is the number I'd bet on which may or may not be a conservative number. You can bet these cars will come out and sticker from $38-$42,000 WITHOUT any market adjustments. You can bet there will be market adjustments too. The vert will reach Corvette territory price wise. I'm sure they're struggling with price performance combinations as this is written.

There is one thing I don't get.

Why would Ford wait 2 years to introduce Cobra? What for? Why not now? Past 2 generations had Cobra same year when they were introduced.

Please dont spread this 'inside information' I have been holding for a long time. Lets keep it within TMS members only or I will loose my job!

The next cobra will be faster then the standard mustang gt, and cost a little more too.

Now shhhhhhhhhhhhh!

AMEN!

Dealers and salesmen are the source of more incorrect information than just about anything else. Then all this info gets passed along on the net as fact. It may be a surprise to people but ford doesnt give dealers the inside track on new models. You are more likely to hear about it first in a magazine or on an automotive journalist site. The average mustang fan knows more about the car than 99.9% of dealers out there.

I keep thinking back to the "SVT certified" salesman that asked me when I got back from test driving my 2003 cobra "So how does 320 horsepower feel" .
