I am pretty sure that is correct, 3-series will be sedans only and 4 series will be the coupes. Similar to the 5-series vs. 6-series.

LMAO!!!!
SVTJay.... why don't you tell Ford just exactly what you're looking for and see if they can accomodate you. If you look at the numbers for the '05 Z06 you'll see that the GT500 isn't too far off.... "The new Z06 achieves 500 horsepower in an approximately 3130-pound (1419.7 kg) package and is expected to deliver 0-60 performance of less than 4 seconds, eclipse the quarter-mile in less than 12 seconds "
I just can't understand what all of this complaining and disappointment is all about. I'd be happy as a pig in..... doodie to be able to have one of these cars. If you've got higher standards, then go elsewhere... don't even set yourself up for disappointment.
SVTJay, I don't mean to pick on you specifically.... I really don't intend to sound like a jerk here... perhaps it's me that is menstruating and needs to be a little less sensative, but I just con't believe how many people are doggin' the best Mustang ever. You know.... there's simply nothing that can compare for the price... bottom line.
I think we all just need to sit back and see how she does... if the people that do wind up with one like it, then I think it's a success... if they don't, then Ford can re-evaluate their decisions about what to equip this car with.... again, it's not a huge profit for Ford, so perhaps we need to take what we get and stop the complaining.... it's not like someone is putting a gun to our heads and forcing us to buy.
You know.... it's not like it can't be modifed either. If you really know what you're talking about, then you'll know that an IRS can be fitted bcak there, and that a bigger engine (or smaller if the sand in your vagina happens to be the engine weight up front) can always be put in, and racing seats with a full roll cage and 5 point harnesses can always be added. Most people don't know this, but you can even change the shift ****.

But there was the Z9 concept (which previewed the current 6 series styling) so BMW can indeed count past 8.

"there's simply nothing that can compare for the price... bottom line."
I disagree. If the Shelby comes in at 40-45k, you are in C6 range.

ok, the C6 only has 400hp... so if you want to play in the same arena, you're lookin' at the Z06, which runs upwards of about $75K

If you are buying on the base of the printed specs then yeah.
But we are educated enthusiasts here, and we're smart enough to buy based on what counts - real world performance. No one knows the results there yet, but with its extra 500lbs, a GT500 will probably not have an easy time with a C6.
Good thing ya'll IRS lovers aren't Camaro fans, the morgues would be full. Lighten up, you will probably get your IRS in a couple of years, meanwhile I'll be getting my jollies off with my SRA and getting ready to smoke ya'll off when it gets here.
I think the two most obvious reasons were already stated, but apparently completely missed by those who are still whining.
1) $5K extra to build an IRS for THIS car, not any other car...for this car...which is perfectly logical in economics as well as engineering. For one, they don't make an IRS for any other Mustang to distribute the R&D costs over time, so for economy to scale, it'd be prohibitively expensive to build IRS for a limited production car. The BMW 3-series all share the same chassis, albeit with slight differences, but they make 450,000 of them a year worldwide...which allows them to R&D and share the load. Simple economics.
2) Power, building any IRS that is capable of withstanding the kind of power output this car has would take a lot of R&D, some pretty seriously heavy parts, big hardened gear sets, beefy links, beefy axles and bearings, beefy CV and/or universal joints, etc. All of that stuff would need to be very heavy duty, and that costs lots of money, weighs a lot, and takes a lot of R&D, and if you want it to weigh less, you need increasingly more exotic materials and even more R&D...which all leads us back to point #1, see above.
Obviously Ford has made a very competitive rear end with what they are using, and the fact that it competes well against IRS cars is enough to satisfy even the raggedy old automotive journalists, why not some of you?
End of story, so everyone who is b1tchin up a storm, get a grip, be happy with what you're (if you are even planning on buying one) getting for the money, that's a LOT of horsepower for the dough. And after all, this is a Pony/Muscle Car right? Or did I miss something....
Josh
PS, I would also suspect that Ford has already learned a lot from the IRS they installed on the previous Cobra, which has not been entirely reliable, so my guess is they know firsthand more than any of us could postulate, what it would take to make a suitable IRS for the new Cobra, that won't shatter, and won't weigh a ton, etc. They've already tried it...my guess is they know better than any of us could pretend to what they are doing.
