Autoweek Says
"Ford's headliner in New York is a high-performance version of the Mustang. Engineered by Ford's Special Vehicle Team, the next-generation Mustang Cobra is expected to go on sale in 2006. In a nod to high-performance Mustangs of the 1960s, the 2007 model will carry the Shelby name. Ford also will display the Sport Trac Adrenalin concept in New York. Powered by a 390-hp, supercharged 4.6-liter V-8, it teases at a performance version that could be coming for Ford's next-generation Sport Trac. Ford has confirmed that the redesigned Sport Trac - slated to go on sale in 2006 after moving to an updated Ford Explorer platform - will get a V-8 engine."
So I guess the suprise is that the SVT Cobra will go on sale next year and then the following model year we get the Shelby Cobra.

Yeah That article had me confused a minute there too. Its a 2007 model Shelby Cobra GT500 going on sale in 2006.
Without starting another thread, what kind of mark ups do you all think we will see when this car hits showrooms? I ask that becasue I'm reading 40k for this car and people getting excited about it, but I think MSRP will be more like 45k.look at the Ford GT, dealers are selling them for 250k, 100k markup over MSRP. When I first saw an 05 it had a line on the sticker,"Market value" $2000.00. I have read of even higher mark ups in other cities.
With original Sheblys going in the 150k range, Elenors 90k, I predict dealers will double the price on the stickers. Think about it,the last time a Shelby Cobra GT500 was made was in 1969, and those cars sell for 150k. Here we will have an all new car, modern in everyway, with more HP and goodies than the originals ever dreamed of. I think thses cars are going to be the most desired, sought after, scrambling to buy one, wanted way more than a Ford GT. And you knw what happens then, the sky is the limit on dealer markups. You all watch and see!!

This article mentions that Ford expects to produce about 7,500 of the new GT500s. Wonder if that's a self-imposed limited edition rather than a sales estimate.

They'll probably sell as many as they can produce to meet demand.
There are a lot of big name dealers who will not charge over sticker.
I suppose this car will still be sold at SVT only dealerships?

I have noticed Ford "usually" sets limit as to what they "think" demand will be. They did this with the Mach 1. Demand was higher so they continued the car. I think the question is how many can they produce if they had to? I really think they'll just label this the "one and only" Cobra and roll any outstanding orders to the next model year.

Along those lines, I wonder if the 2007 GT500 will be the only "official" Shelby model SVT produces, after which they'll continue production into 2008 and beyond with a return to the non-Shelby SVT Cobra?

I kinda think Ford might work out some deal to buy the name "Shelby" for future cars. Maybe pay royalties to the family or something. You have to figure ol Carrol is close to retiring or passing on , and here he is close to the end of his career maybe, with Ford.

That right there is the #1 reason I don't think SVT should have it's hand the whole Shelby ordeal.
I like Shelby, I like SVT, I like Saleen, and I like ice cream...sorry. That is why I think the SVT Cobra and the Mustang Shelby Cobra GT500, god that is a long tittle for a car, should be seperate.
W/ the SVT Cobra, there are no royalities to pay to anyone.
One last thing, 7500 is the proposed/expected # for this vehicle, correct? This is for the '07 MY? Then what after these 7500 units have been sold and it's the '08 MY? Are they going to drop Shelby from the name and then be back at SVT Cobra? If this is the case, why go through the hassle just to be back where you started before all the fuss was created?
I don't think "royalties" get paid when it comes to cars. Ford most likely licensed Shelby's name for a set amount of time (like 5 or 10 years), and a set amount of money. That way, they can produce Shelby badged models even if something happened to Carroll. I certainly don't want anything bad to happen to Carroll Shelby, but it isn't like he is out in the factory putting these cars together one at a time himself. lol
So, i think the Shelby portion of the new Cobra's name will be there for a few years. Not just 2007. In fact i would venture a guess that the name will be there throughout the life-time of the S197 model, if Ford chooses to use it that long.
