I was thinking about possible upcoming Mustang special editions and I got an idea--a Mustang GS, based on the 2005 Grand American Cup GS Class Champion FR500C program. Clearly you can't offer the FR500C to the masses, but you could come close! It'd be a car strictly for the core enthusiast.
Picture this (remember, fewer options makes it more production-feasible):
Mustang GS
Coupe Only
Mustang GT Grille & Front Fascia
Spoiler Delete
Dark Charcoal Cloth Interior
Shaker 500
No Interior Upgrade or Interior Sport Appearance Package
GT500 Wheels (possibly a different finish) & Tires
Ford Racing Performance Parts FR1 Power Pack, FR2 Drag Pack, and FR3 Handling Pack

- Dampers
- Springs
- Sway Bars
- Strut Tower Brace
- Torch Red, Satin Silver, & Black
- 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic

Wasn't there a '68 from the Ford with a drag pack called the Tasca Ford Cobra Jet or something similar?

Sounds kinda like the old 1995 GTS idea (no spoiler, cloth seats, etc), but with more go fast goodies

I'VE THOUGHT OF THAT, GOING SO FAR AS TO DROP IN THE CAMMER.
EVEN PUTTING ON GS EMBLEMS IN THE SAME SCRIPT AS GT.
PUT IN A SPARCO/RECARO DRIVERS SEAT, T-56, EXHAUST TURN DOWNS COMING OUT THE BACK, FIKSE 18X10 RIMS AT $2G'S A POP, BASICALLY A ROAD GOING FR500C, A "FR500R/T!!"

Wouldn't it just make more sense to offer the performance packs as Ford Racing parts installed at the dealer? I am not sure how many people want a semi-hard core car like that (and NO Mustang should be sold without the IUP IMHO )
But, if you really want to get into the whole GS thing, strip the AC, the radio, much of the insulation and use more alumimum or carbon fiber to drop the weight to 3200#. Now we are talking something more befitting a GS car.
Of course, you probably couldn't sell more than 100 or so because I doubt the buying public wants a hard core 4 seater.

I would buy one over the regular GT. You could probally get what there was for less than aftermarket, if you talked the dealer down. But then again, you never know with large auto companies, you could end up paying more.

When you buy in the aftermarket, you replace parts that came on the car and eat their depreciation. That's why SVT kicks Saleen and Roush's butts in bang-for-the-buck and sales. In the case of my GS idea, the Ford Racing parts would be installed on the line, so the cost would be greatly reduced.

I have one already.
'06 GT with only IUP, leather, locking lugs and spoiler delete.
It would be nice to have a list of performance goodies to choose from right from the factory though.
How about a GT with several engine options?
4.6 3V - 300 hp
5.4 3V - 350 hp
4.6 3V S/C - 400 hp
5.4 3V S/C - 450 hp
All with aluminum (dry-sump) blocks and forged internals.
SVT Cobra:
5.4 4V - 400 hp
5.4 4V S/C - 500 hp
IRS optional.
That would be a certification nightmare I guess.
