Said it before and will say it again. The Opel Vectra is a great car, had one for 3 months in Italy while I was there working. GM takes that beautiful car and makes it the new Malibu, butt ugly. If you don't believe me look up the Opel Vectra online. The GTO is going to be a whole new car in the next two years when the deal with Holden expires. It was a Lutz quick fix to a bleeding company. GM will turnaround in the next few years with the Solstice, GTO, and the G6 (grand am replacement) sedan. If you haven't seen that car take a look online.

let the words "GTO alternative to SE mustang" come out again... youre forgiven.

no its not an alternative. if anything it will be another class. they can drop whatever motor they want but the truth is that it still will not sell. its ugly and its already got a horrible reputation. i doubt it will be a 12 second car. my guess it that it will be like the mach. 13.1.

who would buy it anyways.... for 33 i would buy a cobra that would run circles around the GTO... or fast grand am for the lack of a better analogy.

OK I get the ugly part.

I highly doubt the GTO will go up in price from dropping in the LS2. It's the new corporate V8 motor for GM. Probably cheaper than an LS1 to build. And GM already knows the GTO is having a hard enough time selling as it is.

I doubt a bone stock '04 Cobra will run circles around a ~420hp GTO.

So it looks like no one on here would even consider a $33K 6.0 GTO.

I personally am not intersted. I have respect for the car. I don't like the looks. If Mustangs and corvettes didn't exist, I would consider it because of the V8.

edit: Not a real fan of the C6 styling either

Maybe I'm wrong, but the GTO weighs close to 3800 lbs., while an 04 Cobra weighs closer to 3700 lbs. The Cobra supposedly has closer to 420 hp, not 390, and the LS2 would put out closer to 400 hp.

The Cobra might not run circles around the GTO, but it would sure open up a few cans of you-know-what on it.

I've seen more of just about everything on the road than I have GTOs and that includes 04' mustangs. The GTO is a failure for a variety of reasons including but not limited to price and styling. Trying to make it more F-body by jacking it closer to the Vette isn't going to help. Nor is making an already undesirable and overpriced car even more overpriced.
When The new GTO comes out from the ground up we may have some problems, but not many, if the rrumors are true and the new F-body twins are the GTO and Chevelle then things could get interesting. I look forward to it. I knew a chick named Chevelle. God she was hot.

GM Sucks. The only brand that actually stands out is cadillac and they live on three vehicles, The escalade, the CTS and... the pickup escalade.

I went to a Pontiac dealer about three weeks ago and purposely parked the Mach 1 close to a red GTO. It was no contest. Four or five salesmen were circling the Mach 1 like sharks, and I think they were drooling. As a parting shot I told the they could get one for $24K wn3d:

I don't like the styling of the current GTO, however a restyled 400hp GTO for $33,000 sounds interesting. It would depend on if I liked the restyled goat, if there was an SE out yet, and if I like the SE. I think asking on this board if people would consider buying a gto is going to get you the obvious answer. However, I think the average buyer, like me would consider it if they make it look a lot less like a sunfire-prix and don't jack the price even higher. Having said that, I don't think the styling will improve dramatically. It looks like no matter what I will probably put off getting anything until 07 at least. Then I will choose one of the following based upon income, disposable cash and how much I like each:

SE Mustang (cobra or shelby)
charger
restyled gto (camaro/chevelle possibly)
new bronco

If I have more money

Kirkham 289 FIA hybrid
Ferrari 512BBi

More money:

Ferrari 612 Scaglietti
Holmann Moody GT40 MKII
365 gtb/4 daytona

More money:

Ohio class

I wouldn't consider a GTO until they restyle it, which I understand will happen around the 2007 or 2008 model year. I like many things about the GTO (interior, exhaust note, engine, and fit and finish), but I don't, along with many others, like the styling. So the answer is that I won't consider the GTO with a LS2 engine. I like Mustangs too much.

Although I unltimately want a SE Mustang slotted between the GT and the Cobra, I plan on purchasing a GT, once the 18" wheels are made available. I'd rather have an 05 Mustang GT than a GTO with the LS2 engine. IMO I get a much better looking vehicle, that is still a great performer, for a lot less $.
I'm with you. When the first rumors about the new GTO came out the hp and the interior made me consider it, but the minute I saw the exterior I moved on. By the time the GTO looks like something I'd want to be seen in, I'll be seen in a new 'stang.

And you're not gonna get 440 hp (or whatever) for 33K.

I don't think you will see a 400 hp GTO for $33,000. There is alot of speculation about what the 05 will have. Sounds like it will have hood scoops but they will be non functional, it will have the dual exhaust split to both sides rather than coming out one side. The motor is really up in the air. It may be a higher cost option, or it will be standard. Either way, it is definitely going to be more money. All of the current GTO's actually come with the LS2 block, with LS1 cam, intake and heads. It wouldn't take much to make it a 400hp LS2.

We know there's no SE stang till summer of '06 when the Cobra comes out.
It'll be $40K+
GM is about to drop in the 400+hp 6.0 LS2 into the GTO most likely within a year from now.
An LS2 GTO would be a high 12sec car

If the price remains around $33K and the car is available say next spring, would that get some buys from people waiting on SE stangs?
About the Cobra. its not coming out until fall 06. and it will be an 07 model. Not summer 06. just had to clear that up guys. PLUS if the GTO does come with power like that I can see it comparing to the new Cobra or shelby if you like. Price wise. I bet they'll be around the same. And the Cobra(Shelby) is going to have more power. I don't understand why you would want a GTO. even if you love GTO's I wouldn't buy it. Its a German built muscle car? I've neverherd of such a thing. Its stupid. It looks like a Grand am or something. It has no body style what so ever that follow the old GTO's so. I would find it to be a waste of money

The only way i think i'd see the GTO as an alternative was if i was definitly able to get the HSV GTO Coupe panels for it from Australia and bolt them on. then I'd hapily take it. As it is now the car is just to vanilla.

Right now I'm hoping for a Mach but when I'm ready to buy if no mach is available it will be just a GT. I'm not seriously hung up on SEs.
