The face in the fire... (56k warning)
<Scroll down to the bottom to see the ones with faces> While I was on the same camping trip from the "Cool camping related pics" thread, I started taking pictures of the camp fire. I started with this one:
Then I started zooming in and stepping up the shutter speed, trying to freeze the movement of the flame on film (or the digital equivalent). The lens only went to f/3.5 so the background started blackening out as less light got into the camera and here is what I started getting:
And then we started building the fire up higher:
And bigger...
Zoomed in on the fire and coals:
Then I stepped the shutter speed back up and zoomed in on individual parts of the flame. The results were somewhat interesting. In some of them, you can see what look like creatures or faces. The effect is pretty cool and just in time for Holloween:
This one on the left looks kind of like the head and neck of a dragon rearing up
Top left in this pic another dragon:
ghoulish:
half of a face
This one is kind of hard to see but to the right of the picture and just above the middle it looks like an eye with half of a smile below it:
Looks kind of like the mask from Sauron from the beginning of the first Lord of the Rings movie
This one looks like a skull to the right with a glowing eye
Now I didn't look at any of these until I was done taking pictures. I started going through them and thought "cool dragon", "huh...looks like a face", etc. But when I saw this one...a chill ran down my spine. Not only does it look like a head but it looks like it's smiling. At the camera. Disturbing...
If anyone's having trouble seeing the faces/etc I can trace the outlines.

Thanks guys, I'm really pleased with how these came out. All in all I took well over 100 pictures in the span of an hour of this fire. And all I did was set the shutter speed and white balance and let the camera do the rest.
Yeah Scott....that thing still freaks the hell out of me

if you look hard enough, you can see faces in all kinds of things. Not that it makes the pictures worth less, but humans tend to see faces in random patterns
