a charcoal newbie

my wife wanted me to draw her and my daughter in charcoal...a medium that i have never really used before.

So here it is for what its worth.

No, but i think comic art helps since it is based off human proportioning. And realistic proportions is really what I feel makes or breaks a protrait.

What I really noticed were the hands.
So many times that what seems to bash a drawing.
Your work on the hands looks spot on.

The problem with hands is that each part of the finger goes in a different direction and each one requires different forshortening.

And i know this is one of the most complex things to draw...when i first started drawing comics in grade school every picture in the comic i had strategicly places and hands and feet either behind somthing or out of frame since i had trouble drawing them.

But I had to man up and put them in every drawing to get comfortable and use my own hand for reference when possible.

But anyway on this drawing it was much easy because it is drawn off a photograph so i just drew what it looked like rather then worring to much about doing the foreshortening myself.

dang this was one long winded post about hands.

I've used charcoal a bit, but only for my fine arts class last year. That is pretty **** cool my friend

I've never been one for drawing people, so I am very impressed
