V6 to GT brake conversion

Ok, I know there is a thread on this somewhere, but I can't seem to find it using the search tool.

So as noted previously, all you need is the GT caliper bracket/support and GT rotors and 17" wheels. Done, it's that simple. The Gt and V6 use the exact same caliper and brake pads.

Here are the part numbers.
6R3Z*2B134*B - Bracket
4R3Z*1125*BA - Rotor Asy

You'll have to get actual prices from your dealership. But it should be just under $300

I had one of our Parts Guys confirm the parts and compatability. He owns a very nice AC Cobra Replica so he's very into making sure the details are correct when it comes to parts compatibility.

i just did my fronts about a month ago

ordered GT takeoff's from newtakeoff.com for 200 bucks and got 4 speed bleeders ( only installed 2 so far) bled them and tada!

just make SURE you follow the ford bolt torque specs for the calipers and brake line brackets .. theres a ford racing pdf flying around that will work perfectly

i did all this because i thought the fronts were warped and causing the pulsing/squeeking .. it was the backs lol now gotta replace all 4 with rotopros rotors ;p

overall for first time ever doing brakes took 1.5 hrs each side just do NOT rush and should be easy

bracket prices

I converted my fronts to GT, the caliper mounting brackets cost me 35.00 a piece at my Ford dealer. the rotors! buy slotted, cheap than oem from ford. might as well paint them why you have them apart!
Oh! when you get the new brackets they have GT S197 casted into them and the V6 has V6 S197 thats how you tell them apart..

I also confirmed that the backing plate is identical for both cars.

You don't need the GT Calipers. The V6 and GT calipers and brake pads are the same parts.

All you need to get from new take off are the rotors. Which they happen to sell for $39 for the pair. That's a smokin' great deal! Compared to the $100+ each for new parts. And, the GT caliper brackets like $30 to $35 each. That's a little over $100 for the whole conversion.

No, the Pony Package uses the V6 rotors and mounting bracket.

I'm going to upgrade my Pony to GT rotors and SS brake lines. Then it will have nice solid brakes unlike the squishey mess they are now.

Are you sure this is the trick to better brakes?
I didn`t realize how bad mine were till I drove a Mazda 3 "WOW" what a difference. But nobody has a definitive idea on what to do to improve mine.

Mostly it will be the SS braided brake lines that will give better pedal feel. The OEM rubber lines expand with heat to easily and you get mushy pedal.

so...what's the difference in the rotors? if the brakes and calipers are the same, is there really any advantage to doing this?

There BIGGER, more surface for improved braking. Yes !

But if the brake pads are the same size then technically you're getting the same surface area of friction to stop the wheels, hence making them the same only larger rotors... correct??? The way I see it, if you want more stopping power you need to increase your surface area of brake pad contact... meaning bigger brake pads. Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm new to a lot of this.

No, you`re getting more surface area in one revolution of the disc. Granted bigger pads and or caliper would be even better.

Think of it this way, take a bicycle wheel and start it spinning. Try to stop it by grabbing the axle with your thumb and index finger. Now spin it again and try to stop it by grabbing the tire with your thumb and index finger. Getting further out from the center adds more leverage to your action.

Gotcha! Makes sense now. I Wasn't thinking 4th dimensionally (for anyone who enjoys Back to the Future one liners)

The change in distance swept is minimal and trivial. The advantage of bigger brake rotors is
A - more mass, hence more heat capacity (conversion of kinetic to thermal energy, what brakes do), less brake fade after repeated use.

B - greater diameter, so even with the same brake pad the torque you're applying to the wheel at the point of contact is greater, torque = force x radius (ft-lbs)

C - they look cooler behind big wheels

D - you have to do something with your money before the government takes it all

Oh, and by the way, still have my entire front brake kit, rotors, calipers, pads and all, with only 3k miles on them.
