Hey there... now that's I've got Bamachips' excellent SCT tune and my C&L intake installed, that one wheel breaks loose far too easily.
So, I'm going with a t-lok as my next mod. I've heard so many say to go with gears while you're in there mucking about. But, I sort of dig how she currently revs and sounds at highway speeds and am thinking about sticking with stock gears.
Let's face it... I've never been to the track (but am thinking about it after this last mod round)... and the car drives about how I want it to, with the exception of the single wheel burnouts. Then again, the idea of surprising the occassional stop light challenge is fun too.
My main concern with gears is the higher rpm's at 70-80 (my normal cruising speed) and the effect on mileage. And, keep in mind, this is my daily driver.
So, let's hear all the angles... pros and cons of adding a t-lok and either leaving the gears stock or upgrading to 3.73's (I'm very sure I don't want the higher rpm's of 4.10's). Many thanks!

I'm pretty much in that same scenario. It is my daily driver, and fwy about 80% of the time. I actually didn't think about it much to say the truth. I know I will suffer a bit at visiting that pump a bit more, but I'm going with 3.73's to wring out more pep out of it to bring a huge smile to my face. This reason as well is going to keep me running a 91 tune on it for a good while when I get it.
I have yet to go to the track as well, but when student drags come by over at Irwindale, I may have to participate.

I read that the 4.10's will run 500 RPM more at 70 to 80 MPH. I drive from Northern Virginia to DC every day, usually on RT66 via carpool at 60-70MPH and to be honest, its not bad. The car was always loud with the Magnaflows, but now with the 4.10's it has moved the drone to 70-80, so following the speed limit is actually not bad.
Even so I love my 4.10's, no way I'm getting rid of them....besides, they are a must for AUTO's. If you are manual stick with the 3.73's.
Just my opinion. You know, MSP did a chart with all the RPM ranges on the various gears...hopefully he'll chime in here.

I'll chime in. I'd like to hear what you guys think about this also as I have the same set up. I was also wondering about the effect of 3.73 gears without a t-lok? Or is that just stupid?
I'm with Hamid, would like to hear anything you can offer.
I just want to add that since joining TMS I have found this an great resource of knowledge and tips. Thanks.

The reason we say do both at once is cost. Installing one without the other means basically paying the same price (300ish) over again ifyou ever want to have them installed seperatly. So you're basically paying halfprice for both mods install.
The T-lok w/o the gears wont be bad, no reason not to do it if you dont think youl be putting the gears in later. If you went 3.73s I think the added mileage from the tune+cai would equal out with the higher rpms of the gears. 3.73s arent that bad on milage.
Gears w/o the T-lok is just.. eh, bad idea.. you're going to smoke that one tire to death on launches and cornering and everything I think its going to break the tire loose way too easily. God knows I do it enough w/ stock gears and no t-lok. I wouldnt think it would be safe, or smart. You're going to NEED the t-lok with added gears, so might as well do both at the same time for the aforementioned reasons.

Very true, cost wise this is the best time to do it. And if you are worried about the car being loud stick with 3.73's. You'll be fine with those, but comming from someone with 4.10's, it isn't that bad. And if it is get some resonators.

And since I am a bad influence, I must say, launching with 4.10's is so friggin cool!!!!! Turns heads, and I like looking at the import piece of crap in my rear view.

Thanks guys. It sounds like if I'm happy with the stock set up then leave it alone but if I want added traction/torque and a better launch then go with both. Also, I have heard that the t-lok will help stop the fishtailing, especially around corners?

The T-lok gives TQ two both wheels, especially to the one with most traction, so if you got one tire stuck in mud and the other on solid ground, the one on the solid ground will get the tq as well.
With the open diff the tire with least traction will get all the power, so for performance thats the one legger.
I say for winter you'd be safer, especially if you live in snowing states. On a corner a fishtail will be more controllable, so for that rain you can stay planted.
I'm going to need it, as I don't have TCS. A good way to get it done (using scare tactics of safety w/o one)

Well I opted to stick with the stock 3.31 and install the the FRPP T-Lok. I'm having it installed a week from tomarrow. I drive on the highway alot and prefer the gearing I have now. I also don't plan on adding gears in the future which is why i'm just putting in the t-lok. With just the t-lok I should only notice a difference in the rain or in low traction situations which is why I wanted it. To each his own, it truly depends on the individual case, but for me, I didnt want a gear change.

Which gears would be better from 0-60?

I have a manual, so i did not want to get gears that would cause me to shift to 3rd to hit 60. The 3.73s will get me to just over 60 before I have to shift (I hit 60 at just under 6,000 RPMs).

Thanks guys... lots to think about. I think 3.73's and a t-lok hit the sweet spot for me... feel a nice difference at launch without sacrificing too many mpg with the higher rpm's.
I know gears don't add anything at the crank, but do they increase rwhp?

"hamidlmt" Just to let you know, I kept my gears and only added a T-Loc. Lanches are so much better now. Plus now when I light up my tires I leave 2 black marks. In snow you will feel a big difference.
