Hello all,

I got a Steeda tune system a while back with an 87 and a 91 octane tune. I have a couple vehicles and I started by running the 87 which gave me better fuel economy and a little bit sharper performance. I am curious as to your thoughts on the 91. Does it make a noticeable performance difference to upgrade the fuel? I know a V6 is not going to be a huge power player but I was just curious as to people's experience.

I have not run the Steeda 91 octane tune, but I have run both the 87 and 93 octane tunes in my 2011 5.0 with the Steeda CAI. I do not have any empirical evidence to support it, but the 93 octane tune feels stronger to me. I don't drive the car too much, so I have left the 93 octane tune for the last couple of years. The cost of the premium fuel doesn't bother me.

 

The higher octane tune is generally going to give you a slight increase in power because it allows more ignition timing to be added. It has nothing to do with the fuel.

 

i understand what you are saying, but you need the higher octane fuel to run the additional timing to avoid pre-ignition/pinging. You can run higher octane fuel without the high octane tune, but you shouldn't run the high octane tune without the high octane fuel.

I'm assuming he is upgrading the fuel with the corresponding tune. Yeah, if you just change the fuel without the tune it won't make a difference.

 

You said that the fuel doesn't have anything to do with the tune. I just pointed out that you need the higher octane fuel to run the tune safely.

 

I said the fuel doesn't make a difference in power. It was an assumption on my part that if your're gonna run a higher octane tune that you would run the higher octane gas. My point was it is not the fuel but the tune and the ignition timing that gives you a little more pep. The increased power comes from the tune, not the fuel octane. If you run 91 or 93 with your 87 tune there will be no difference in performance.
