2010 4.0 Pony Mustang duel exhaust. Just got the Stage 2 CAI, need a tune before mounting - I get this so far. I can buy a X4 tuner for 338.00.
They are telling me I have to have a custom tune added to the tuner to make it work with the intake. Seriously I need to pay an extra 100$ to have
a custom tune added to the tuner.
OK, now I get it. The CAI really doesnt add much in the way of power, its there for looks and sound. Its the tune that the car benefits from. Add a K&N filter
to the existing housing, up your octane and put a tune in it for a mostly stock motor and you have everything that little 4.0 will do. I should have studied more
before posting - my bad.

Most SCT X4 programmers have preloaded tunes for cold air intakes, depending on which vendor you purchase your hand-held tuning device from... Unfortunately, I'm not very familiar with the Stage 2 CAI, so if it's not under the CAI list options in your preloaded tune menu? then, yes you may be required to get a custom e-mail tune or custom dyno tune which is designed specifically for your CAI...
like he said ^ you could check with SCT to find out if they provide a setting for that CAI
The important thing is the diameter of the mass air flow metering section. Apparently the "Stage 2 CAI" you are referring to, has a larger diameter than stock, and that is why it requires a tune. If you can find out the diameter, there might be a different CAI with the same diameter that is supported, which should work just as well. You could discuss all of this with SCT if you can get someone on the phone.
This is how it went... Installed the CAI and the tune, 93 Octane. Car runs much better! Increase in the lower rpm range (noticeable) and increase the shift points. Put maybe 50 miles on it all is well. Then got a check engine light, hooked up the scanner and states running rich. I guess that happens alot, so hooked up the tuner and the tuners says it found a change in the settings and asked if I would like to re-tune and I said yes and it fixed it. No more check engine light and now it runs even better! Could I make it run even better with a custom tune? Maybe, but if I like it the way it is with no issues.. Why bother! Im happy!
Btw Never Seen a 4.6L Engine Cover on a 4.0L Not Bad! I Sold A Couple of Pallets Worth of Those Covers When They Came Out Back in The Day For Some Lowly Price in the $60.00 Range ! Went Like Hotcakes!
I got lucky - found that one for 50$. Let face it - the 4.0 is a butt ugly motor. I would go to a car show and some guy would say "open the hood", I'd say - its a work in progress!
I just put the cover extension on it and that helped and when I get the strut brace that should cover up the "still weird" looking parts. I dont have much left to do, gotta be careful I dont put too much money in it I'll never see again.
Yup I saw it - doesnt look bad I just didnt care for the box look. I actually got the idea of the 4.6 lid from a post on here.
Thought it looked more stylish!

If your satisfied and content with the performance of your current tune, why bother with a custom tune? Unless you intend on adding larger heads, cams, LT headers or add forced induction which all require additional airflow and tuning, your stock engine otherwise can only benefit from the amount of airflow that it was originally designed for... Anything beyond that is just nothing more than overkill...
Therefore, IMHO you would be wasting your hard earned money by upgrading to a custom tune on a stock engine that won't really benefit from it, to begin with...
This is NOT going well! Installed the X4 tuner, 93 octane performance tune. Car runs pretty good but couldnt get rid of that **** CE light for running too rich. Bugged me so I called Blessed Performance and they said I really needed a custom tune. Big jump in performance and no CE light. So I spent 130$ and bought it, they emailed it to me and I installed. AND THEN IT ALL FELL APART! First the wrench light came on after 3 minutes of driving, CE light after another 3 minutes, then she went into limp mode! Back home I go and run the codes.... P061B and P1000. I tried to put the original tune back in and same thing. Their custom tune did something to the ECM I cant fix. I tried putting the stock tune back in and then the 93 tune and same thing. I got an email into blessed performance but I got a feeling it'll go over like a fart in church! Any ideas anyone?
My Tune Went Fubar on My Gt-500 and Would Not Go Back To Stock Tune. I had a Buddy {FORD TECH} Bring Over The WDS From The Last FORD Dealer I Worked at and He Flashed it Back to Stock. After That I Was Able To Insert & Remove My Custom Tunes At Will. I Blame it on a Low Battery & My Impatience in My Case Not Following Steps to Completion. Tunes Are Great Until They are Not! Your Tuner Needs To Send You a As Built Stock Tune To Start Over or Your Going To Have To Find Somebody Who Can Put The Latest Stock Tune in Your Vehicle. And I Tried the Tune Upload Before My Buddy Got Away Just in Case it Went Fubar Again . If it Had I Would Have Left it Stock for The Time Being!
So Even if it Not Working If You Do That You Still Need To Have Downloaded it Back to Stock So The Corrupted Tune Can Be Replaced!
Anyhoo That is My Thinking. My Tuning Experience is Limited To That Experience! The Harley Truck Had a Pre Tuner Superchip in it. The Wife Went Through a Lot of Tires With Her Fat Foot and Then We Had The Wonderful 4 Thread Spark Plug Heads on the Truck and Popped a Sparkplug Out. Got One New Head Under Warranty and The Chip has Been Out Since Then as The Other Head is Still the 4 Thread Style! These Days The Tires Time Out Before Running Out of Tread! BTW What is FORDS Problem With Sparkplugs in General! Don't You Think!
Please if Anybody Has Better Info Please Chime In! Just My 2 Cents! Here in California Most Tunes Are Illegal So I Never Got a Lot of Feedback on Them or The Process Other Than What I Gleaned Here on TMS!

First off, a basic bolt on like cold air intakes do not require custom dyno tunes... Whoever told you this from Blessed Performance is full of B.S... Any tuners from AM/Bama, Steeda, JDM engineering and SCT all include preloaded tunes for cold air intakes... My advice, get your money back from Blessed Performance and purchase an SCT X4 hand held tuning device from any of the tuning vendors listed which all include preloaded tunes for your cold air intake...

Also, if your check engine light is on for running too rich? it's because something isn't calibrated properly in the tuning parameters from Blessed Performance... Therefore, the best way to know for certain is by re-flashing back to the stock tune and also reinstall your stock airbox, if you still have it...Once you have the stock tune back in, you shouldn't have any more check engine light!

first make sure the tune is correctly adjusted for that intake -- if there was an option for that specific intake in the tuner, that "should" work. The important thing is that the tune must be written correctly for the diameter of that intake tube.
If the tuner does not have a specific option for that exact intake and/or Blessed Performance cannot assure you of the above (or they don't seem to know what you are talking about) then go elsewhere

John! You would think if Blessed Performance is an experienced tuner, they should know full well how to properly write a tune for a JLT cold air intake which most tuning vendors do in fact include in their cold air intake packages...

yeah I would think so .... but it seems like maybe not?
P1000 is code that drive cycle is not complete -- not sure why that would be triggering the CEL; but it makes me wonder if they turned off the rear O2 sensors, which is a no-no these days ... this should clear after the mysterious drive cycle is completed -- OP, if car is driving OK, you need to drive it some more to complete the "drive cycle"
P061B is internal control module torque calculation ... not sure what that is all about, but potential causes include faulty mass air flow sensor or dirty mass air flow sensor; and I think a miscallibrated mass air flow sensor could trip this
I gave up on em - I did get them to send me another tune that I was actually able to download and install. I realize that I paid 130$ that I'll never see again but their Custom Tune was just so terrible! The car would launch
so hard and then fall on its face! Momma told me not to say mean things but there's no way I can recommend Blessed Performance to anybody! I removed their tune, reinstalled 93 Performance and tuned it MY WAY! Car runs awesome now, Plenty of low end, hard shifts and power right up to 5500 RPM's.
