New air filter -- how much of a difference?
#1
All,
I am going to be getting a K&N Airfilter for my V6 '06 Mustang. I was curious though, how much of a difference does the K&N (or other air filter other than the factory stock one) make, performance wise?
Thanks!

No mater what K&N and the others claim, there is no noticeable performance gain in using one of these filters !!
The main benefit is better filtration and the fact that you can use it for many more miles ... I've had the same K&N for almost 10 years. First had it in a '94 V6, then my '98, and now in my '04 (around 210k miles total to date on it). I have cleaned it a re-oiled it every 60-80k miles. Compare this to a std. paper element that should be changed every 20-40k miles.

Cool.
My wife works in the automotive industry and she said the same thing you did, but you know how it goes.. Does anyone believe their spouse? ahah
Anynow, she was telling me about one of the K&N demonstrations where they have a ping pong ball and they place the ball on the stock air filter. They blow air, through the bottom of the filter and the ball doesn't move.
They do the same thing on the K&N filter and it flies off the filter. Pretty impressive.

I bought my K&N for $37 with free shipping (part # 33-2298)

May be just the placebo effect, but it seems to have just a bit more oomph. I've heard it may add 1-2 hp.

Stock - the first 2 tanks
260.7 miles, 14.216 gallons = 18.34mpg
242.7 miles, 13.032 gallons = 18.62 mpg
With the K&N filter
247.8 miles, 13.234 gallons = 18.72mpg (K&N was installed with approx. half-tank left)
262.4 miles, 13.163 gallons = 19.94mpg
Over 1mpg improvement... not bad. But, I'm looking forward to a few other mods down the road to help improve hp and mpg.

I bought the GT mufflers off e-bay for 45.00. Installed the right one only on my V6 car. It made the sound much better, but it picked up 1 mpg also. I will buy the KN filter to see if I can get 1 more. I am getting 20 in Atlanta traffic. No road trips yet. Thanks
I've had my K&N in for the last tank and a half. Here are my mileage results for the first 1400 miles.
