So i got my TT and 4.10's installed tonight and it is ugly. The guy who did my work told me right away that i wasn't going to like it. He said that motive gears has had quite the reputation for whining gears......said he had'nt used motive gears in 10 years so he thought he would just give it a try.....Nope! every time i push on the gas i get the grossest whine.....Has anyone else experienced this with Motive gears especially the 4.10's?
I guess what i will do is go to Ford and just order the gears straight from them...Any pointers??? I need anything i can get right now!

If its only 'power-on' whine and not present @ low speeds its likely your pinion gear/pinion bearing. Don't blame Motive. Ask your installer if they checked pinion angle w/ a dial indicator/did not using gear marking compound/did not torquing the rear end correctly/did not taking the time to seat new bearings & shims or possibly worst of all -- re-used.

Also, be sure that you are running a gear oil *WITHOUT* friction modifier!! Use the motorcraft 75W140 Synthetic and *DO NOT* add friction modifier with the TT! The warning about adding friction modifier to the gear oil *only* applies to clutch-plate based limited slip diffs (FRPP/Eaton, et. al.) and does NOT apply to TT. You will get a noisy rear axle if they put friction modifier in the oil when they filled the pumpkin back up w/ gear oil if you put in a TT.

Hope this helps,

Eric.

Well after I finally got my car re-tuned for the 4.10's I could actually figure out right when the gear whine starts. It begins to whine @ about 25-30 mph....I'm installing FRPP 4.10's hear in the next couple of days...so i'll let ya know how it goes....

@cosmo---Haven't really punched it yet as i knew right after they were installed that I was probably gonna have to get something different....But I can def. tell a nice hard launch and the car's rpm's

Got my Ford Racing 4.10 gears installed...Talked to my installer, and he said that with the old Motive 4.10 gears that he had a good mark and everything looked like it was setup nice.

The new gears are absolutely heavenly! I can't tell you how horrible it was to hear that whine every time you hit the gas after 30 mph. Drove the car for about half an hour today lightly and didnt get any wine all the way to 80

I'm glad this worked out so well for you. I'm having the FRPP 3.73's gears put on my TT in a couple of week (Yes, we are rebuilding the axle a 2nd time -- just gotta love this stuff. ). Whats odd is that Motive is the manufacturer of the FRPP gears. The 3.73 and 4.10 FRPP gears are manufactured by Motive. The 3.45 FRPP gears are made by Ford.

when ford was short on production numbers, they bought some from motive. They do make their own now. You can tell the difference by lookin at the pinion gear, the FRPP ones have a oval ford symbol, the ones they bought from motive do not

I had my Richmond 4:10's installed around the same time Scrming/John did. There is some low speed whine. I had the install checked and everything was right on. They were installed by a shop that does a lot of NASCAR and have a good rep. At first it bothered me but I got used to it. It's certainly not bad enough to pay to buy a “quieter” set installed and besides the “quieter” set could turn out to be not so quiet after all. Anyhow the result in performance is well worth putting up with a minor whine issue.
