When I'm on the highway and there's a patch of rough road that can't be avoided and it goes across the entire lane, my car skips or bounces off to one side. It's kind of dangerous. The car moves a few inches to the right or left and I don't have any control over it.

What causes this? How can I prevent it?

Have you owned a sports car before? They have more of a tendency to hold the road than a normal car, so they jolt around a bit if the road is bumpy.

I've owned a Porsche 944 and a Honda S2000. I don't remember the Porsche skipping off to the side, but I do know the Honda never did.

There has to be a reason for this and a way to prevent it.

I wouldn't worry about it unless it starts carrying a purse too, then some intervention may be required I have not experienced what you describe, I know what you're talking about as I've had cars that did that before, but not the stang. Might check your tire inflation, I'm not sure what else could cause it.

The Mustang has a live axle, not independent. It will "skip" sometimes. Rough pavement or some turns will bring this out. I don't remember it being that bad or dangerous.

I only notice it a bit, on bad fwy's, and with speeds over 75. If its a good road, or if I keep lower speeds it's always a solid ride.

It's called "no IRS"...oh geez ,here we go again.

I was following an 05 GT the other day on the freeway in San Fran...of course it's bad pavement. The guy found a pothole on a corner and his rear axle was shaking like a wet Golden retriever. The way the back of the car sits up in the air it was plain to see. I was a little surprised to see it so graphically.

If it hops to one side consistently it could be a bent strut/shock. Same thing happened to my friends car. Usually only happens cuz of an accident or a big pothole. Other than that mine hops a little this way or that on bumps too but not to a loss of control point.
