Hey Jimp, congrats!
Hope all goes well.
I got mine done yesterday with the Ford t-lok and 3.73 gears.
A word of caution to anyone that got Motive 3.73 gears recently, I got mine from Mustang tuning.com and they must have got a bad batch from Motive. The spline shaft on the pinion gear was .007 inch over and would not go into the flange. i had to get a correct sized set overnighted to me. Made a three - four hour job into a two day job!

I, like the big dummy I am, thought that synthetic was better just becasue it was synthetic. I have always just accepted that as fact.

I got 75W90 because I basically did not know any better and the mechanics who installed it said that that weight was what they put in all of their gears and that synthetic oils were better.

Now:

I talked to customer service at both TracTech and Drive Train Specialists.

They recommend that you use NON-synthetic oil. For VA, they said 80W90 was fine.

TracTech said to avoid synthetics because the oil stays cool but does not suck the heat away from the gears.

However, they said that synthetic oils would not harm the TrueTrac. They also said that friction modifier would not harm the TrueTrac, it just wasn't needed.

TracTech also said that if it was working fine, don't sweat it. I told him what I had and he said not to worry, just change
the oil at the regular interval.

I wanted to rush out and get it changed immediately but have calmed down and will wait until I put on duals. I haven't been driving that much or launching really hard, so I should be fine. Just thought I would share what I found out.

Thanks for the info! I guess I will stick with what I have for now and change it after 500 miles(that's the correct break-in period, right?). Now, the question is: what gear oil should I use when I change it? I live in Florida.

FWIW, this Ford TSB gives some info about the rear end oil...

I told him that I ive in VA and he said 80W90 is fine. But Ford recommends 75W140.

I STILL can't find anything that says that conventional oil is better than synthetic. But then again, the same companies produce both and synthetic is more expensive... So what are they going to push?

According to the TSB, Ford uses synthetic (albeit 75W140).

I think I will switch to synthetic 75W140 when I get my duals put on. I have a girdle on mine, so the drain and fill will be easy.

Thanks, Hambone!

Thanks man! Well I got the car back. Feels VERY strong now, I really have to feather the gas on take-off. I've tried to take it easy but the installer told me that the TrueTrac really doesn't require a break-in period. It's it pretty cool feeling when both wheels are driving the car(should have been that way from the factory!). I chirped second already under partial throttle. I really was trying to take it easy but...I pulled up to a light, four lane that turns into a two lane right after the light. A truck turns in front of me before the light turns green. Some dude in an Explorer in the lane next to me decides to try and race me, lol. I give it part throttle, Explorer punches it, I punch it and pass both the Explorer and the truck in front of us easily before the lanes ends. LOL@trucks. I'll try to get a pic of the rearend tomorrow, and the wimpy stock cover!

That's great Jimp! Glad to hear your install went smooth and you're enjoying the new rear end!
My pinion gear from Motive was .007 inch over on the splines and I had to get another set overnighted to me. Mustangtuning.com wanted to charge me $70 to send them even though Motive confirmed my set was defective!!!!
My mechanic got a set from U.S. Gear which is here in Chicago. He had them the next morning and I got my car back Wednesday afternoon. I got my updated tunes from Doug today and will test them out tomorrow. I can tell you I had the same feeling as you did Jimp. The rear really hooks up now and feels soooo much better with both wheels driving the car. I've been nervous to punch it because they told me to take it easy for the first few hundred miles but I've already got 75 miles on the rear so tomorrow I'll probly drive it a little harder.
Sorry I didn't post this sooner Hamid but I was freaking on my gears being wrong!
You won't be sorry you did this after you get yours installed. Even without giving it much gas you can tell the rear end wants to light em up. It rainy/snowy here today and it felt much better than one wheel drive. Much more traction and no fishtailing! I did almost go allthe way around when I punched it on a corner though. Had to let off and straighten up. It feels a lot more solid and you can really tell both wheels are pushing. Anyway, congrats on your upgrade Jimp and Hamid you'll love it!

Thumbs up

I have a concern regarding Anti-Lock brakes and the Detroit TrueTrac. Is your vehicle equipped with ABS? If so, does your ABS still work in the rear?

I've heard that the way ABS works on RWD is the circumference of the differential has a toothed rim. The truetrac axle is un-toothed & smooth surfaced. Its my understanding the toothed rim of the rear differential is how the ABS system senses when the rear wheels are locked up because the differential (and of course the toothed rim) cease to spin. W/O toothed rim on axle I'm afraid the ABS won't work.

Any thoughts on the true-trac rear axle & its impact on ABS equipped cars?

Just amazing what these mods do! Makes it a whole new ride and ya almost have to relearn how to drive it (like babying the throttle just so you don't squeel the wheels)! Congrats!
