does anyone know, for sure, that ford will replace the cologne v6 with 3.5 duratec; or is this just wishful thinking? jackg 90seville 96k

the cologne v6 dates back to the 1970's...it was theperformance engine for the original capri. the size of the original engine was 2.8 liters and was ohv. the current iteration has a counter rotating balance shaft, where the cam in block for the original ohv resided. the balance shaft, while smoothing out the block in the higher rev range takes a significant amount of power away from the output of the engine.
the block on the cologne v6 is cast iron and is four liters...lots of weight over the wrong end of the car. jackg 90seville 96k

From what I have read Ford isn't intending on using the new Duratec engine in the V6 Mustang, at least not right away. This was posted in some of the other threads a couple of months back.......

Your close, the actual start of the cologne engine was in a 2.6 varation in the early style Mercury Capri. Also, the shaft that runs through the engine where the old camshaft was isn't a balance shaft but a Jackshaft that only runs the timing, it has no balance shaft capabilities. Now on the 99-05 4x4 Explorer's/Ranger/Sport Trac's ford did put an balance shaft in the oil pan but I don't know if it's in the Mustang's yet.
I use to run a business called http://www.4.0performance.com/ and I've been messing with the 4.0 in OHV form since 93' and in SOHC when they came out in 97'. If you can find it there's a book called " How to build and modify your Ford V6" that was in print years ago, the author is Sven Pruett the Cologne V6 god. It's a good book to tell you some history on it but it was written in 93-94 so it really doesn't have much information on the 4.0 OHV and nothing about the SOHC.
Thanks, Doug.
thanks for settiing me straight...i had the ohv version in my 93 explorer and had a coolant loss that the engineers could not pinpioint...so i have some nasty experience with the 4.0. i should have known about the 2.6 since it is a euro engine and 2600 cc's is a common size over there. the original engine was a little screamer...it would move that light wieght capri very nicely. jackg 90seville 97k
