8.8 Swap
#1
I was considering a swap from the 7.5" for a 8.8" rearend. Does anyone know how much this would cost? I want to buy an 8.8 assembled with 3.73 gears. I know FRPP is selling 8.8s for $833, but I don't think they are compatible with the 05s. If you can get an assembled rearend for $800-900 and install it for $200, that might be better than upgrading a 7.5". Gears and T-Lok are $400 and the swap kit and accessories are over $100. So if you can upgrade for $300-400 to an 8.8, not bad. Thought on this one?

Ive thought about it, and been thinking about it, and Im still gonna keep thinking. If you're going high horse power down the road, its the way you wanna go. You're just gonna waste money on that 7.5" and twist it in the end anyway. Personlly, I have no idea when I might reach that much power, and want a t-lok and gears in the mean time. My big question.. will the 8.8" link up with our tranny?

dont we have the same 5 speed manual that the gt had last year? and the same 5 speed auto that the gt uses this year. So i dont see why it wouldnt work.
EDIT: you might have to get the whole rear assembly, dont know for sure though.

The 04 GT has a different tranny, its a T-3650, the V6 has a T-5. The drive shafts are different. The GT has a two piece axle, the V-6 a one piece slip tube. From my feeble research, I'd say the drive shaft should link up with a T-5. Except for the diff itself, I think they are about the same size. This was with old fox-bodies, so this might have changed. I'm thinking gears and blower long term would beat down the 7.5"

I just had gears and t-lock done today.. the guy at the shop mentioned the weird driveshaft we have in the 05s... they even took picture of it! LOL! And apparently a stick on it that says "if dropped, discard." hmm......

I definatly want a 8.8 swap with a 3.73, but what im doing is im going to wait until there are a few more dead 2005 gt's in the yard with front end damage... see if i could pick up the whole assembly with no damage, a lil bit cheaper.

from a different thread i just posted...
Ok... Took my car back to the shop that did my 4.10/Track-Lock to have the oil changed (700 mile for break-in). I was talking the the guy who put it all together. Talked to him for quite a while and this guy knows his stuff! I asked about the durabitly of my 7.5. His bottom line was that the 7.5 should be good enough for me... He said what usually gets guys in trouble is when they swap out the v-6 for a big v8, have a manual tranny and then put on slicks. He said that's when you will see your spider gears "explode". He said I don't need to worry about that now since I went to the Track-Lock. So for the time being I'm thinking the 7.5 is going to hold up....

What gears did you get? How does it feel now? Big difference?
