4.0 pony package automatic 4.10 gear swap
Anybody switched out their stock gears to 4.10's? Ive heard you get more torque off the line but heard that the top speed lowers. So im debating wether or not to get em from american muscle. So far i have a cia, 91 tune, and duals with h pipe conversion. Thoughts?

When it comes to gears the power the engine makes is actually not affected at all. It only changes when and how the engines uses the power. With a 4.10 gear you will accelerate and rev quicker which will make the car seem like it has 50+ extra horsepower, when really you are only changing the gear ratio.
You will really feel the car take off quicker, and technically your top speed will decrease a little bit. However, your top speed will only be affected minimally. You most likely will only lose about 10 MPH at the very most.
The bigger concern would be fuel economy in my opinion. If you use this as a daily driver, and drive on the highway a lot, you might be paying more for gas. On the highway the engine will rev higher and burn fuel quicker.
If that doesn't concern you, or if you don't do much highway driving, the 4.10 would be the way to go. If you do drive on the highway a lot you may want to step down to a 3.73 gear instead.
Either way I think you will quite please with either gear, and it will certainly wake the car up quite a bit.
I hope this helps, and if you have any other questions, feel free to get back in touch. Good luck!

Thanks so much dan for responding. Really appreciate it and love how american muscle really caters to the s197 people. I understand how the 4.10's would accelerate revs because the gears thus burning more fuel so i think a step down would be the way to go. Im also curious about a t lock and 8.8 swap? Or are those options for just manual tranny's?
