At the risk of sounding ignorant there used to be some discussion on a new 3.5L V-6 coming out for the Mustang with 250ish HP. Since this is the most reliable source for info I was wondering if there has been any more news on that ??? :scratch:

im pretty sure we all came to agreement, that it doesnt make sense for ford to go through all the work of planting a 4.0 in there, just to change it to a 3.5 in a couple years. And although the 3.5 has much more HP, its lackin in the torque area, which is what most people enjoy.

The bottom of this post has some background links on this motor. It will be built in Lima, OH. It will feature an aluminum block built by Teskid in Alabama. This is good for us Mustang folks as that would mean weight savings in the V6. It features variable valve timing -- good for Vitamin H AND fuel economy. These pictures show the engine with a VERY low oil sump. That IMHO is BAD for us Mustang folks as that means the engine would have to be mounted higher in the engine bay and they likely could not fit the car with the long runner intake manifold that they did on the Mustang. Plus you'd have to forget about suspension lowering, etc. That would mean the V6 mustang would loose its signatrue throaty growl (yes, long intake runners on the intake manifold means sweeter sounding exhaust) and likely have ill effects on handling. The current Ford V6 Mustang 05+ is a true 'sleeper' car. The took the same base engine found in Ford Exploders and Rangers & fitted it w/ long runner intake manifolds (hence why strut tower braces are so tough to fit on this car) and special exhaust manifold headers unique to the motors fitted in the 'Stang.

With this 3.5 engine, in its current form, the V6 Mustang would go back to sounding like a typical fleet-rental car or mommy-van grocery getter. Those types of vehicles would benefit from the new Duratec 3.5 as the buyers of those cars don't care about the things that Mustang owners care about. If you read through the links you see that the engine can be safely bored out to 3.8 liters -- which is pro-mustang. But, the overall design of the motor seems anti-mustang due to low oil sump and wimpy corporate V6 exhaust. NONE of the articles confirm/deny/speculate on fitting of this motor to the 'Stang. Duratec = Ford Corporate fleet V6. I'd cringe if the put a Duratec in the 'Stang. The truck-based 4.0 is more of a gearhead motor.

With Fords migration and investment in Lima, I have not yet heard of any plans to simultaniously mothball their Cologne, Germany engine plant where the 4.0 is produced for the 'Stang, Exploder, Ranger, et.al.

Dittos. Lets hope Ford does not awash the sweet car the V6 is w/ some dumb-numb coporate mill.

The 4.0 offeres a great baseline for those who would love to mod.
Thats a great post Eric, I agree that we have a great sounding V6. I wouldn't give that up for 40hp and what seems to be a less torquier engine. It is a great powerplant, but I also don't think its Mustang material.
I feel, once aftermarket catches up some more, we will have a really satisfying V6. And one that provides some fun, and enjoyment to rod it out. At least Ford gave little thought to the V6 and not sacrifice a bit of that Mustang flavor.

I saw something over at Blueoval News. It showed the phase in of the 3.5 over the next 4 years or so. The Mustang was not even listed so I wouldn't expect to see it in the Stang. It would drive up the base price, probably over $1,000. The 4.0 would offer equal or better performance until 5000 rpm or so. I doubt the 3.5 would offer much better straight line performance. With the extra cams and tech the 3.5 will probably weigh about as much as the 4.0. The 4.6 V-8 only saved about 65 lbs with an aluminum block. The only real advantage I see with the 3.5 is NVH, it will be smoother or more refined.

The 4.0 engine will also be the base for the unofficially announced Shelby V6. See other threads for that. Its possible to supercharge the 4.0 engine to some pretty incredible levels (search yet for other threads on that - covered @ extreme length elsewhere) & the 4.0 motor has a lot more mod potential than the 3.5 IMHO. The V6 4.0 is here to stay likely through 2009.
