I am about to make a decision on the final piece to my Mustang Puzzle (yeah right, it'll never end).
Since I've completed the much desired supercharger I am now looking at big brakes. From what I can tell the brakes on it are OE. Previous owner didn't do a lot of driving so it is feasibly. At any rate I want a big brake options. I have decided on the Wilwood kits. 14" 6R in the front, and 13 4R in the rear. AM, Stage 3, and Shelby American all sell these kits. What I can't seem to figure out is what, if any; difference there is to the Shelby versions other than their name on the caliper. I also notice their kits include the required e-brake cables and brake lines so that increase I understand.
all prices below include the same brake kits and required lines.
other than the name on the caliper I can see no difference between these 3. Obviously the price at Stage 3 is a no brainer, but I wanted to be certain I am not missing anything?
Nope, no experience with those, I understand you are doing a high-end build and want high end stuff . . . but you can get good brakes for a lot less money; SVT Shelby GT500 14" Brembo kit for the front for about $1,100 plus GT500 rear rotors and brackets for about $200 total. If interested in that I can give you more details.
Thanks for the follow up. Where have you seen the GT 500 Brembo's for 1200? The only set I can locate is nearly the same cost as the front and rear Wilwoods for just the Front's only... 2700 I believe
Now I have seen the "Ford Performance Brembo package offered for a good deal but they never seem to be in stock and only come with single piston rear calipers. Yeah I know I probably don't need more than that but at this point it is more important finishing the car the way I see it in my mind and not having any regrets later.
LMR does have this in stock: I believe they are the same as what AM sells.
These are some interesting reads. I am going to spend some time learning about this as it could be a good direction for me. Although I am 90% set on the deal offered by S3MS.
This only does the front (plus braided lines and pads for the rear). Then for the rear, you can use the larger GT500 rotors with the stock calipers and a bracket that a guy sells on e-bay for about $110. I have this set-up on my car. This is obviously not as nice as the wilwoods or the bigger GT500 kits; but it is more than adequate for road track use, especially in combination with track pads and cooling ducts.
I put on the Wilwood kits you mentioned in your post. I bought them from Shelby American, because I wanted the Shelby lettering on the red calipers. Yes, I overspent, but because I have Shelby GT500, I felt it had to be done......so therefore, I had to downsized the wife's Christmas gift!
But truly a huge upgrade and they are wonderful. I'm very happy...

Hey flipper,
Thank you for the feedback. I will most likely pass on the Shelby Version's as I just can't beat what Stage 3 is selling them for. Obviously they wont say Shelby, but 3300 shipped is far better than 4300 shipped with just a name difference. But I am like you and things have to be just they way you want or you'll always have doubts and regrets.
Yup and never thought I could enjoy stopping as much as I do now. Very expensive brakes but you definitely can feel the quality. Bit of a pain to install the rears though. I wasn't prepared for having to remove the rear axles to get the new bracket installed. Although it did give me reason to order a new diff cover since the OEM cover was off. Has some issues with the quality of the studs that hold the rear calipers on. These are not meant to be taken on and off very many times. Poor design as you virtually have to do this in order to get the spacers correct. Both sides resulted in a stripped out stud that became an issue. I was able to get them removed and located replacement studs at the local hardware store. The thin-walled loc nut was another issue however. I got lucky and had perfect spacers that allowed me to use a traditional loc-nut on both sides. Something to consider Wilwood!
Overall great choice in brakes and you wont be disappointed!
Thanks for the reply. I just went with the fronts for now. Just had rear axles installed rebuilt tear end new gears and diff cover just two weeks ago Lol.
Front only will be a huge improvement! Sounds like the rear got a nice rebuild. Would have been crappy to have to take all that out for a few seconds bolting on a new bracket. Easy enough job, just messy!
It wasn’t a planned upgrade lol. Went in for long tubes, clutch, and T56 magnum trans and they heard some nose test driving it. I heard something to but was not concerned. They found spider gears coming apart. Fix it the right way ya know! Super charger was last fall.
I hear that! Probably the worst way to upgrade, but equally satisfying in the end. What SC did you go with? Might have missed it but I don't see specs for that in your SIG.
It has been about 4500 miles since I installed the Kenne Bell 2.6 and all I can say is wow! I never expected the car to change so much in feel and drive ability.
Paxton Novi from Brenspeed. Yeah it went into storage shortly after and when I took it back out it went on for those other mods. So it was a bunch of work in very few miles seat time. But it’s like a whole entire new beast of a car. Better be after I’ll I dumped into it lol.
