I'm willing to bet they are not an 05+ offset (been looking desperately myself), so they will stick out about 3/4" past the fender. I don't have any photos, but someone here probably does. Other than that, they will work.

IMO, the main reason you don't see any 17x10 wheels out there is because of physical limitations of the car. If you use a typical 2005 offset/backspacing, then the lip of the wheel will extend well past the fenderwell. And if you go with a deeper backspacing/offset to clear the fenderwell, then you run into interference on the inside of the wheel.

+1 on the offset.

No... with a larger diameter, the 18's don't have the same clearance issues of a 17. For example, the 18s might go under (or around if you prefer) the swaybar and/or bracket, where the 17 would hit it.
Below is a pic of my 15x9 Weld XP (with about a 25mm offset). Note how tight it is. Now imagine this being a 17. It would not quite clear the bottom of the bracket if it was an inch wider and had a 45mm offset. But an 18 would clear the bottom of the bracket, and thus would be able to have a deeper offset to allow a 10" width.

ahh, thanks Don! that's exactly what I wanted to know! I have been getting mixed results when looking around for what size wheel will fit. Thanks for the info! Looks like it's going to be best for me to get 18x10. 18x10 and 305s shouldn't have trouble? I dont' know much about offsets either (I assume that means how deep inside the wheel the lug holes are?), what offset would I need?

Here's a nice explanation of offset and backspacing. http://www.bentickner.com/tahoe/wheels.htm
For a nice fit to the fenderwell, you want about 3-1/4" from the back of the hub to the front of the wheel. I think most 18x10s for the 2005+ Mustangs also use a +45mm offset (~7.25" backspacing).

Hey Don... Not trying to be a smart azz... but I don't think your math is correct. It would be around 8.25 backspacing for a 10 inch rim.

If I understand your question right, you want to go as wide as possible, without rub issues on a 17 inch rim as your first option, and 18's as a second option...
If you want to stay with 17's, you can go with 17x9 wheels such as SVT wheels for the 99-04 models. The offset on these wheels is approx 26mm, which sets the wheel out further. A nice 275/40/17 tire is perfect for this size wheel. This wheel/tire combo is OME SVT specs. So, if you know any cobras owners who are selling theirs, your set. I went this route and I love it.
If you choose to go 18's then, you can also go with wheels for 99-04. Same offset, same effect, just fills in the wheelwell a little better.
As always, a moderate drop will finish off the look. I'll post pics of both examples...

let me look through my pics of my 05 with 99-04 17" SVT wheels, as well as an 05 with 99-04 18" wheels...

For street driving, what's a good 305 tire?
