When to do the first oil change?

I agree with your thought process here. I didn't change it quite as early (200 miles) but figured it certainly couldn't hurt anything, so why not do it? With today's machining capability, there is no where near the amount of metal shavings as in the past, but I'm sure there are still small amounts.
