One of mine is bigger than the other..
Just to put a serious note on this...Kevin posted the new TSB that takes care of rear axle whine(TSB 05-20-2). If you have these on and want the newer fix(old was TSB 05-7-3), I would leave them on and ask your dealer for the newer fix. Ford called these 'tuned dampers'. I believe Ford has a small test area outside the assembly line where they drive the vehicle and do a quick check for noises and loose components...at least they do this for the SUVs. They probably put them on if your specific car exhibited the 'axle whine'.
see post #19
my rear vibrates like heck when i let off the gas if im going more than 85mph...sounds like an explosion of grinding, but has been happening for 5k miles and no ill effects and no noise of any kind <60mph so i havent worried too much about it

Did they check the driveshaft for balance and runout?
I just brought my car in for axle whine and they are replacing the ring and pinion on Monday. None of that damper BS. Putting an axle damper on because of ring and pinion whine is nothing but a bandaid that covers up a bigger problem.
I tried like a mother to get them to put 4.10s in but none of the local dealers would do it. They'll only put 3.55s in.

My car has these dam per things. She'll be going in soon for 6000 mile oil change. Should I ask for TSB to be performed? Is this something to worry about? Is this a common repair that any mechanic can do? I'm not into the whole bandaid approach, but I hate things being torn apart, they never seem right again, but I guess it's not right as is. Have it done-don't have it done? Thanks for any input and for all that has been posted-I've got to send in my $15!
the post above about whine when decelerating from high speed- suggestion: take a look at your carrier bearing: mines cocked really bad- slotted holes one full forward/one full backward...dont see any signs of driveshaft rubbing it, but if axle rotates forward(during engine braking or hard throttling reverse) it might cause noise youre describing...I forgot to get a pic before lowering car off stands(forgot to adjust too...)
