Vortech/Paxton to Saleen blower swap

Hi everyone!

As some of you that follow/post in the POTR or Midwest TMS'ers threads know, I have swapped my Vortech/Paxton blower/cooler setup for a Saleen system from Brenspeed. I am starting this thread so that other forum members that have been PM'ing me asking "what's going on" LOL can know the details.

I was previously running a Vortech s-trim V2 blower with a 3.33" pulley pushing around 11psi, through a Paxton air-to-air intercooler. This system along with delete plates and offroad exhaust gave me 469/414 on Brenspeed's dyno and was a blast to drive. However since I live close to Brenspeed and am able to bug those guys just about whenever I feel like it, we started talking about a modified version of their current Stage 3 Saleen package. I listed my previous setup for sale, and sold the blower and 'cooler in about 3 weeks time. So my car went to Brenspeed on Superbowl Sunday and I just picked it back up yesterday.

They removed the old system and installed their Stage 3 package http://www.brenspeed.com/mustang_200...leenstage3.jpg however we tweaked that package with a 3.2" pulley, Saleen Extreme inlet pipe ( http://www.brenspeed.com/mustang_200...tremeinlet.jpg ) a high capacity heat exchanger ( http://www.brenspeed.com/mustang_200...es/5553706.jpg ) and Saleen's new water pump pulley ( http://www.brenspeed.com/mustang_200...f7uz8509aa.jpg ). We also swapped my Kenne Bell BAP for the complete GT500 fuel system.

The car is a complete MONSTER, of which 70MACH1OWNER, AIRCARE84, and Eleanor Dreaming will probably agree, since they all took rides with me yesterday at Brenspeed's shop. Below is a dyno sheet comparing the new Saleen system to the previous Vortech/Paxton system- basically the Saleen makes more power up to 6000rpm but also makes around 75-100 lb/ft more torque down low, which makes you really get pinned back into the seat. Saleen curve is red, Vortech is blue. Looking at the curve, I would guess that at 3000rpm the Saleen is easily making close to if not more than 100 lb/ft more torque. Also pix of the system below.

Thanks,

Tom

That's awesome Tom!
You went from a whistle to a whine!

Based on your experience and real 'on the road' results, I'm going Vortech baby! ..... stay tuned.

Of course! Centris are great blowers too, I've always said that.

Congrats Tom ! That vid is awesome. I hope to go twin-screw soon too Even though you had more power with the centri, does the twin-screw feel better on the butt-o-meter ?? ? or different ?

Aargh, I was split between Paxton and Saleen and started to lean toward the Paxton kit, until I saw this thread...

The top end high number is lower but look at that dyno. The hp and tq are substancially higher throughout the entire power band. 100 more tq by 3000rpms. Way more butt-o-meter.

Edit: I was wondering if there is another pulley available to make more boost than the one you're using. I was also wondering how much boost you are making with that setup.

That is correct....... from idle to 6000rpm the Saleen is making more HP and way more torque. The Vortech made more peak power- at 6500 rpm it made almost 20hp more than the Saleen yet it made less power at 6000; that clearly shows where the powerband really takes over on the centri and I'll "sacrifice" 20 hp at 6500rpm for more HP and TQ everywhere else in the rpm range.

Regarding pulleys, I am running the 3.2 and am seeing around 11psi. There is also a 3.0 and 2.8 pulley but I do not want to run anymore boost/power on the factory block.

You're living what some of us can only dream about Tom. I've always thought that if I could ever get the extra coin to go forced it would be a Saleen setup. Thanks for sharing and have fun.

Welcome to the Saleen Family Tom. I knew you would come around from the Dark Side..

When you go to the 3" pulley I got 1st dibs on the 3.2". Should be about the 4th of July when you start wanting more power.

Your buddie

I wonder which setup is actually faster. The Saleen has more low end power, but at the strip you are always keep the rpms up. It should be an interesting comparison.
