Tuner questions
Please forgive my ignorance on this topic, but could I get some advice on tuners? What do they do and how do they work? Are there different types? Can inexperienced users use they correctly? Thanks!

Think about it in terms of a computer. You buy a computer from the factory and it is pre-programmed with the factory settings. Someone that is really good with computers can go in an adjust those settings so that the computer can run even faster ... without harming the computer.
That is what a tune does to the car ... it takes the factory settings ... adjusts them ... and makes the car more powerful and more fun to drive (all while not harming your investment - Steeda 0 issues to date with our tune)
The tuning device from SCT is just a plug and play product. You will plug it into your cars port and download the tune. You can check out the instructions here:

We can definitely get one started for you ... you can reach me at tim @ steeda.com if you have more questions or if you would like ordering information.

TJ

Thank you! Would it be better to have a pre-programmed tuner or to take the car to a local performance shop and have it dyno-tuned with a chip?

better performance would be local performance shop option.... but if you are looking for less risk/good service backup better to go with Bama/steeda if yours is manual or for automatic - c&l, VMP, brooksspeed....it is just my opinion.. i m noway an expert in this...in any way you go you will be happy as it will be way better than stock.
If you are looking for cost effectiveness the hand held tuner will be the way to go if you are looking for performance getting the car tuned by a performance shop is better. Or you could even do it yourself with a piggyback system from aem a wideband o2 sensor and a air fuel ratio gauge and tune it for 14.7:1 at idle and 12.5:1 wide open throttle it sounds like a lot but really its not and you tune the car to your specific set up
