06 GT, auto trans, 4.10 gears

I do alot of mountain driving, and one thing I do while coming down the mountain is take off overdrive (which keeps me right around 40-45mph), and sometimes put the transmission into 3rd gear (which keeps me right around 30-35mph) to engine break down the mountain. Going up the mountain, the load on the car keeps the transmission usually in 3rd gear anyway, so I just leave it in drive with overdrive turned off and let the transmission shift however it deems necessary. It does shift around quite a bit as I'm going in to and exiting sharp turns. I'd like to monitor the temperature of the transmission while it's shifting around like that under a decent amount of load, as well as when I'm going down the mountains in 3rd or 4th at a more constant speed.

Does anyone here have one? what is involved in the installation of one?

Install the sending unit in the lower hose going to the transmission oil cooler.

 

Where did you get that block or that the one you made ?

Yeah, no block like that .. I have however sold several 05-06 customers on a specific trans cooler we have that works really well and is very inexpensive.It is not vehicle specific, but extremely easy to adapt to the car.

just check out our website at www.bmracing.com and look at the coolers. We have some with aux. fans and standard coolers as well. the small 70297 part # works great if you want extreme cooling capability, but our standard stacked plate design coolers work well for the everyday use.

yes, I'd like one. How much is the guage and required parts, and what type of install is required? hand tools and a bit of time? or is a jack/lift required? I looked on the BM website and couldn't find any thing.

 

The sender installation is a real PITA due to where it must be located to be accurate. I installed mine during my Saleen S/C install when the fan was out and the front fascia was off. I also suggest removing the windshield washer bottle to make access a little easier.

Just FYI - the block I fabricated, machined and tapped is a nice piece but not a necessity. This is actually the 3rd trans. temp gauge I have installed. The first 2 were very simple - (1) 1/2" NPT Tee, (2) 1/2" NPT x 1/2" barbed hose ends, (2) hose clamps and some thread sealant. The 1/2" x 1/8" NPT pipe bushing came with my Autometer Cobalt Electric Full Sweep gauge. Very simple yet effective. All plumbing parts were purchased from Home Depot. Crude but works just as well as the block.

One other item worth mentioning - use 2 pairs of needle nose vise grips to gently crimp the lower trans. cooler hose on each side of the tee you will install and you'll only loose about 2 oz. of trans. fluid.
