When I first bought this car, I thought it had a transmission problem because I could not shift it as quickly as a foreign transaxle- but there was no defect in the tranny, it is simply not designed to shift quickly. And forcing it damages it.
I have owned or driven more than 200 different performance cars, and on a scale of 1 - 10, this tranny gets a 4 from me. Just my .02

I agree with your rating - it is not power shift friendly and I have not even tried one.

As for the speed of the shift, I find it tends to drag or hang more the slower I go. A brisk but not hard shift generally works better. When this thing gets out of warranty, I will be very tempted to try real bronze blocker rings and ditch these brass ones with the composite material liner. I believe the 3550 (I know this is not) uses the same blocker rings as the old Ford top loaders and this trans may as well.
High speed down shifts (2 - 1) are tough for any transmissions and I really don't see the point.

I agree that high speed down shifts from 2nd to 1st are unnecessary. If I do it it's at 5-10 mph and not that often. I do, however, always downshift from 5th gear as I slow down to a stop - that's part of the fun of having a five speed.

How do I know if I am hurting my 3650/clutch? I sometimes like to open up the throttle for some spirited upshifts (0-60 mph or so) or perhaps downshift to let the motor stretch its legs a little down my street.
