The top speed isn't electronically governed. The car runs out of ***** before it runs out of gear.

No the top speed is governed at 147 and you get to 140 in 4th gear, meaning the car can go past 147 easily

I'm betting around 175-180 pretty much stock. You would have to turn up the HP and change gears to go much faster.

What are the tires rated for?

Don't have a definitive answer for you but:

Original press releases from Ford said that the new mustang was electronically limited at 143 MPH.

Car and Driver did a comparison against a GTO and their article said it was drag limited at 147 MPH, but Dec 04 stated it was "govenor limited" at 149 mph

Vorteched (575 bhp) and more aerodynamic 2005 topped out at 192 mph

Tires are rated to 165 MPH

Comparably horsepowered (and more aerodynamic) 03/04 mach 1 (no govenor) tops out at 161 according to a guy on Mach 1 who said his source was Ford

Therefore my guess would be around 155mph +/- 2mph

Top speed governer is set at 145 mph on the 05' in the programming. I do modify this and raise it to 255 in my tunes mainly because I do some tuning for people in Germany who have the autobahn and good tires. I don't know why it is set like this because on the 99-04's it's set to 180mph.

Later Doug904.

I'm sure you meant 155 mph. Or was it 255 km/h (160 mph)?

Personally I couldn't get it to go any faster than 145 on the speedometer (the actual speed might be even less than that). I didn't modify the speed limiter.

I just took 2 of them tonight with my phone, I just can't get them transfered onto my laptop. I need some Bluetooth software.

edit: instantaneous, not average! I wish...

No... mph. Mine is also set somewhere up in the 200mph range as well, doesnt mean that you could achieve these speeds. If it were 160 mph, that wouldnt be good enough for the autobahn. You could set your speed limiter over 200mph, the fun is trying to reach it

just my $.02 worth

I do not know the details of the 17" GT tires, but as for the 18's"....

P235/50/ZR 18 97W M+S

The Z rating indicates a top speed in excess of 149 MPH.

However, with modern sports cars high speed abilities, the Z rating is somewhat out-dated or defunct and is now "appended" by a second letter that is next to the load rating, which is 97W on the BFG KDWS.

The W indicates a top speed of 168 MPH.

The 97 indicates a maximum weight load of 1609 lbs. on any given tire.

You can bet for all liability reasons, the car can not get close to 168 MPH in stock form even without a speed governor/limiter.

I would think the Mustang should have adequate power and gearing to be able to break into the 150's with any electronic speed limiters removed. The only hinderance would be the car's co-effecient drag, which probably took a backseat on the priority list under styling.

2005 GT Mustang @ 175MPH in 4th gear= 7731 RPM

2006 GT Mustang @ 180MPH in 4th gear= 7952 RPM

2005 GT Mustang @ 175MPH in 5th gear= 5257 RPM

2006 GT Mustang @ 180MPH in 5th gear= 5407 RPM

So basically, its a pipe dream to run a 2005 or 6 Mustang GT @ 175MPH or 180MPH..

Based on the rpm range, which is pretty much towards the top of the powerband, a stock GT does not have enough HP to push enough air around it to travel this fast.. (Wind Resistance)

I agree with AFBLUE the moderator.. 155MPH is more plausable.. It could be done with a taller gear, because this would push the powerband down alittle, in which case there would be more Torque to help push the car through the air..

Based on the fact Ford placed the Mustang GT with a 3.55 gear set, they never intended the car to compete with a Vette or Viper, which both can easily do 180MPH..

Looking at the 2005 Ford GT, a few things are clear.. First is the 3.36 rear end gearset, along with a taller 4th, 5th, and 6th gear..

Looking at the numbers while driving a 2005 Ford GT shows this..

2005 Ford GT in 5th Gear @ 180MPH= 5795RPM (550HP)

2005 Ford GT in 6th Gear @ 190MPH= 5005RPM

So it is obvious, Ford intended the Ford GT to compete with Supercars..

The Mustang GT was never meant to race a Corvette, Viper, or Ford GT!

My guess is the Ford GT could easily do 7500 RPM..

Also, its important to understand that a Ford GT could run @ 190MPH for hours on end.. The rpm range of 5005 rpm, means Ford intended the 2005 Ford GT to actually be able to run on the Autobahn at speeds in excess of 175MPH until the owner decides to slow down..

This is why Ford Dealerships will rape, pillage, and charge a huge ransom for the 2005 Ford GT's.. The car is worth $200K easily!

The redline for the Ford GT is 6500RPM.. So lets say you nailed it in 5th gear until it redlined..

2005 Ford GT @ 200MPH in 5th Gear = 6439 RPM...

2005 Ford GT @ 210MPH in 6th Gear = 5531 RPM...

2005 Ford GT @ 200MPH in 6th Gear = 5268 RPM

Which means, the 2005 Ford GT can cruise at 200MPH!

Just curious when these top speeds things come up, am I the only one that has taken my car over 150? At that speed I am not sure how accurate it is, but my car computer GPS system tracked me at 156mph on I-40 In between Flagstaff, AZ and Kingman, AZ. It wasn't perfectly flat or anything, but the car seemed like it could have done even more, given some more space, and of course if my ***** were a little bigger, but once i got that fast, i didnt feel the need to go any faster, the car probably could have, but not too much more with my mods, and it started to feel pretty light, not too bad, but not like it is at 100-120. I would highly doubt it could get to 175-180 in stock form, probably no way even with my couple of mods.

I believe your GPS.. Must be nice to live in the Arizona Area with a GT Mustang.. I am real familiar with the flat land available to speed sensitive Mustang owners.. I really do believe that where you live, Mustang GT's will visit the 150MPH scenario quite often.. Just be carefull..

stock without a governor, top speed is between 150 and 155, NOT 175

with bolt ons you could probly make it to 165, but the aerodynamics really hold you back past that. throw on a sleek body kit and lower it to maybe break 170.

ive personally been 159 (click the average speed reset continuously and it will tell you electronically how fast even when beyond the speedometer), and it had plenty of juice left in it...but then again i got 322rwhp and 345rwtq, a tad more than stock

No one is going to run these speeds with 3.55's..

Well maybe 170MPH for a few brief seconds, its possible...

2005 Mustang GT @ 170MPH in 5th gear = 5106 RPM...

Ok, I'll agree with you, but better give me atleast 375-400 RWHP to make sure I can push the car in 5th gear and hold it while the 2005 Corvette is running me down @ 185 to 190MPH... Atleast if I can hold it for a few moments, I'll be able to see him give me a thumbs up as he wizz'es by out in the flat lands of Arizona somewhere!

Most will not want to accept this, but a 2005 V6 with 400RWHP is actually just as likley to be able to run this as well..

2005 V6 Mustang with 400RWHP @ 175MPH= 5190 RPM

Bottom line is this, your going to need to have enough RWHP to push the car in 5th gear.. 4th gear cant make it.. So I would imagine most of the Supercharged Mustang GT's with 450RWHP+ can run these speeds, because they hve enough muscle to push the car in 5th gear... Thats really what it boils down to.

So Kudo's to all the Supercharged 05+ Mustang GT owners!! Your car can run 175- 180MPH..

2005 SuperCharged Mustang GT with 450RWHP @ 180MPH= 5407RPM...

Ok guys, set the camera's up, if you live in Arizona, and get another speedo that reads 200MPH, and put a roll cage in your GT, then make us a video..

I dont think you should make this video, but if you do, please post it here, with the camera pointed at the speedometer..

Geoff, sorry to be unclear, i was refering to the earlier post about going 175-180, and I meant with the rev limiter taken off, everything else being stock. of course this is just my estimate, nothing accurate about it, just a gut feeling.

Here are the 2 pics I took. Sorry for the poor quality, they were taken with the phone camera while driving.
The speedometer has km/h in large digits (outer circle) and mph in small ones (inner circle). You can see the indicator at 145 mph.
