Its official.

Someone in this forum with a supercharger had their engine pop. That person would be me. With 9# of boost, 462rwhp, 11.8:1 A/F and a max of 14 degrees of timing. I ran a 11.8 with a 1.8 0-60 foot - it felt great, until I coasted to the second exit and heard what I though was a flat tire (thump, thump, thump). Either way, it clanked its hiney to the grass where it sat for hours until I got a friend to trailer it home. No external leaks, no water i the oil ... so we are convinced either a main bearing went out or a rod snapped. We thougt at first it might have been just a dropped valve, until I realized "No Oil Pressure".

So, does anyone know of a good shortblock for our 05's ? I am looking for all forged with low 8:1 compression. I am looking for recommendations.

Man I hate to hear that. The positive side to it is you can build a nice shortblock now and not have to worry about it next time.

It doesn't sound like a rod breaking or you would have ventilated your block. This is good news as you should be able to reuse yours and save some doe. Oh and if you go with a iron block I read somewhere that there are some differences up front with the cover so be prepared for that.

So what was the MPH on the run ?

Thanks Mike

Ouch! I take it you were somewhat prepared for that happening? Well if anything good comes out of it, it's that you'll really be able to dial up your boost with the new block.

The MPH Suxed because the engine really shut down before the end. However, with that said here are the stats:

1st run:
60' - 2.007
1/4 - 11.911
MPH - 116.99

2nd Run:
60' - 1.862
1/4 - 11.839
115.15

Be gentle guys, these are the ONLY 2 passes I have ever made on a track. I would ahve made some more if "poo had not happened."

I was not preparred for the probelms after 2 runs. I did expect it to blow soon (as in a few months) so I was ready to get the new short block. However, the wait for someone to trailer it hope was SO long. Oh and pushing it 1/4 down the return lanes and 1/4 mile to the front gate just about killed me.

Luckily, swingle007 and a friend of mine helped out. Oh and if the guys in the imports and the mustang from houston-mustangs.com read this - thanks for help pushing it onto the trailer.

That MPH is awesome for an auto. I have not seen any auto's near the 117 range, sorry it cost you though

At least you were prepared. So many people are not . When my Lightning finally let go all I could do was laugh as it just destroyed itself, with parts and smoke all over the road .( 5 broke rods, 6 pistons and both sides ventilated) I was pushing it way over the factory limit so I was expecting it.

Anyway there are alot of good builders out there now for the mod motor. Stay with any of the top suppliers and you should be okay. I built the motor that is now in my Lightning. You might as well add some cubes and port the heads while you are at it

Blazing Saddles, mikem, and JP's performance here run 11.5-11.7 consistently with ZEX and they didn't blow up

Sorry for the bad news.

You should consider building a 5.4 engine, maybe 4v heads. Kinda like the GT500 deal.

Kind of on the subject, what is everyone's thoughts on the built 4.6L shortblocks from SHM? They are about the same price as VT's.

well its sounds like the crank snapped from what you are describing. Let us know what really happened because I might have to do complete forged internals if i supercharge my little 3V 4.6. I will be driving it daily about 100 miles a day. So i need the motor to last. And with only 8 month of ownership and 33,000 miles on the car I need to know what my limits are.

Bryan,

Truly sorry to hear about it, but I think lots of us will be interested in what you find in there as you do your tear-down...

I personally am curious if the anodizing made things [pistons, etc.] so hard that they cracked. And hopefully you can check out the bearings as well to see how those super-tight clearances worked...

Sure was a sad end to what had been a fun afternoon. We were so stoked to see him make the 11's and then it was all over just like that. I know the next one will be even better, just sorry it happened so fast bro......

My lightly modded '05 auto made 13.5 at 102 so I didn't do too bad.....Have to run it more then once next time if all goes well and time allows it.... :-)
