Which Tillman Tunes?? First Mod!!!!!

I just ordered one of the Steeda/X3 deals from Chris and looking for any advice on which 3 tunes to select. I am definitely getting a 93 street race, but debating on the other 2. Do I really need a low octane one like a 87 performance? Or would it make more sense to just get a 93 and 91 performance tune? I know this really comes down to personal perference and driving style/car use... but this is the first time I have updated a tune to a car as all my past wrenching was old school stuff.

I have an '07 GT ragtop (5-speed and 3:55 limited slip rear), and don't plan on doing any real serious stuff, just want to open up the unleashed power that is current trapped with the factory tune!

This is the first mod to the car (whoohooo!!), so any any help or feedback is welcome!

I am also getting the same deal from Tillman. I looked at the common gas octanes in my area and made my decision partially on that. Chris and I discussed getting a 93 street race but in fact, you cannot find 93 octane anywhere in my area in California. 99% of the gas pumps sell 87, 89, and 91 octane. For me, why get a 93 tune when I will never use it? I'm not inclined to go buy octane boost either. I run premium which is 91 octane here. However, occasionally I could see not having access to 91 and having to fill up with 87 for some reason. As a result, I got a 91 street race, 91 performance, and 87 performance. I think this will give me three options that match my choice of gas. I will most likely run the 91 performance during the winter when the streets are wet most of the time and swap to the 91 street race when the streets dry out. The 87 is simply a backup in case something goes awry with having access to 91 in my area for any length of time.

I didn't do too bad running 93 race in the winter so I kept it on this tune from day one. I just have to check again and make sure I can get 93 octane down south. I travel as far as Georgia and Kentucky. But to answer your question, you gotta check out the top dog and that is the race tune no matter what octane. It gives you that explosive power and let's you feel what this car should have done from the factory. That's one of the reasons I stayed with it, plus I don't like messing around with the computer, I let the pros (Tillmanspeed) lock it in and I'm good to go.

So you have found that running the 93 race even on 91 or less octane was ok? I thought the 93 was designed for 93 octane, the 91 for 91 octane, etc. I was under the impression talking to Chris that the programming included many things and some of the tunes are identical except accounting for the octane. In other words, shift points, etc. could be identical but there are minor differences to factor in which octane you are running. Maybe Chris can enlighten us. Chris did say that pretty much everyone ends up running the street race tune since it is the best performing.

As for myself, I run 93 octane only and I found out that there is 93 octane down south, so it's happy motoring for me without missing a beat. Chris will definitely break it down for you. I think I asked him about 3 million questions before I left their shop. I just don't wanna mess with that computer.

Thanks everyone. I am going to do some spot checking around here just to see what octanes are typically available.

Ran out at lunch to check octane availability in the area and the standard seems to be 87, 89, and 93 (checked with 4 different chains just to ensure 93 is widely available).

Based on Touring's recommendation, I followed his tune plan - 87 performance, 93 performance and 93 Street Race. Did not see a point in getting a 89 tune since 93 is widely available. Now I can't wait to get this in the car!

If you are married, you better get the 87 as one of your tunes. I gaurantee at some point 87 will be put in there and you will have to swap tunes for a tank or two of gas.

I am single, but do have an 87 performance on the list. And for what it's worth, my girl friend does not drive stick (and has no interest in learning)... so when that time comes, no worries as I am the only driver:-)

I envy you folks that have the 93 octane still available. In NorCal, I haven't seen anything over 91 in many years. Used to be that Rotten Robbie carried 92, but that is long gone... If I did a 93 tune, I would probably never use it ever. I suspect I'll end up using the 91 street race tune as my standard.

My wife got the intake kit from Tillman about 4 days ago....Yesterday she finally installed it,by her self. No idle issues and everything thing went smooth. She said the lag is gone and thats whats important. She installed the 87 tune and everything went perfect. Now that it only cost 27$ to fill up the mustang my wife wants to stay with 87..... Just wait till i get back.

Now if i can only get Tillman to hurry up and start the header deals..... If he continues to have these deals i think ill go to him for all my mods...

I did find Tillman's prices to be good. I started ordering a Bullitt intake with tunes, then added swaybars, then added springs, then added struts, then added strut mounts...... I just couldn't help myself....
