Throttle Body Spacer

I got my spacer in yesterday. Autoanything's free 2 day fedex shipping turned into a free 7 day anonymous freight carrier shipping. Beggar's can't be choosers I guess. Anyway I am spray painting the spacer black now with 1200 degree black oven paint. I'll put some pics up later in a new thread.

Now if only my CAI would come in. :bang:
Ordered that last Wednesday from Lidio at Alternative Auto. He told me up front that he was out of the C&L but he was expecting a shipment of them any day. I called yesterday and the shipment had not come in and they were calling around to find out what happened to it. Haven't heard anything yet.
I ordered mine from Autoanything because it said they were in stock with free 2 day shipping. I called a week later and they said no one had told them they were back ordered. It ended up shipping through DHL, which took several days. It also appeared to have shipped directly from Jet according to the label. I guess saving $40 was worth waiting a week or two.

I've waited over a month to get mine and I get to pick it up today when I get home.
AA can kiss my a** for any future orders.......
Alright I masked it off and painted it with 1200 degree flat black paint. I left a little exposed around the edges, because I figured the edges would show blue if I didn't.
[attachmentid=34386]
So when you peeled the mask off it looks like this
[attachmentid=34388]
After I installed it it looks like this. It matches the intake color perfectly. You can see I scuffed the edge though when I installed it on th eright hand side but I'll touch it up later. I don't think I let it dry long enough.
[attachmentid=34389]
Man that resevoir is close now. I wonder if I should shield it somehow.

Alright I just took it out for a ride. No noticable MPG gains because I wasn't driving with fuel economy in mind. :drive: I think I notice it has a little more get up and go to it now.
Anyways I do notice that when you mash on the gas at stop or even cruising speed I hear a puffing (ppfffttt), whistling, squeaking type sound right after your foot hits the pedal for about half a second. You guys hear that noise too? Maybe I didn't tighten everything down right, although I was conscious of doing so when I assembled it. I'll rip it apart again and check it later.

Alright I just drove about 20 miles around town and I think I have some insight now on the whole concept of this TB spacer and the whistling sound.
First off I'm a mechanical engineer by trade with some background in Fluid Mechanics. Air flows very similar to liquid. If you have a tank of water with a hole at the bottom, the water will empty a whole lot faster if the water in the tank is swirling around like a whirlpool, instead of just dropping out. The TB spacer works on the same concept, swirling air has less resistance and flows through your intake manifold much faster and more efficiently.
Analyzing the whistling sound with the window down driving late at night lets you listen more clearly. I noticed that the whistle only happens when you first tap on the gas. Then I noticed you could control the sound of the whistle by varying how far you push the pedal down. It only happens when you press the gas from normal position to about a tenth of the way down. Past about a tenth of the way down, you don't hear the whistle anymore.
Then I started thinking about what is going on inside the throttle body. You remember how the TB has those 2 flappers? (somebody please tell me the technical term) The flappers control how much air is going into the engine. Now the flappers don't close all the way because your engine would stall at idle, so it probably closes at least 95% of the way. When you step on the gas the flappers open and that first rush of air hitting the swirlies on the TB spacer is what makes the whistle. After the TB flappers open far enough, the whistle is gone. You can't whistle your lips with your mouth completely open right?
Judging by how instantaneously the whistle happens after you press the gas tells me that the "throttle lag" in these cars is either caused by one or both of two things:
1) the servo motor in the stock TB reacts instananeously to gas pedal response, however opens too slow and doesn't let air in fast enough
2) there's some air resistance problems in the stock intake manifolds. Once the TB opens up, it can't get to the cylinders fast enough, robbing power
Now judging by how these aftermarket TBs comming out eliminate throttle lag, I'm willing to bet they have faster servo motors in them. Even though the stock TB opens up slower, this TB spacer makes the swirling air get to the cylinders much faster, reducing throttle lag. If you get air to the engine faster, the more HP and TQ you will get.
Overall I'm impressed with this product. It has greatly reduced throttle lag as far as I can tell. I don't know about eliminating it yet. I notice a lot more power in the car now. The exhaust is a little louder too I noticed. The jury is still out on fuel economy. Overall a good product and worth the $93.

Flappers = butterflies.
I just put mine on a few days ago and I'm not happy with it all.
I could feel an increas in low end torque when I installed my SLP's. Now it feels like the TBS took all that away. The car feels stock again.
I'm VERY disapointed, but I'm going to give it a few weeks before I make my final decision.

Okay the gas mileage verdict has been reached. With normal city driving and agressive driving, there is no noticable MPG gain. However driving at 70 mph on the highway has jumped my mileage from 24 mpg to 28 mpg plus. Seems to work best at low RPMs. I'll test it out at 55mph tomorrow.

From what I understood the TBS is supposed to help low end torque also. I am expecting with the low end torque increase from my Borla's plus the increase torque from the TBS there should be alot extra.
It did take awhile for the computer to relearn after the exhaust swap maybe the same routine needs to be done for the TBS after a battery disconnect.
That's what I'm guessing. Mine seems to be doing better now.
Problem is, there was such a long time where it was running bad while it reset itself, it's hard to tell if there's any improvement.
If I had it to do all over again I wouldn't have disconnected the battery.

I think the throttle body is just another expensive part with a low power earned to $$$ spent ratio. The spacer is very affordable and it provides enough power where most of us need it.

Those results are what I'm hearing also. I went with the TBS for now with intake and tune because it was less than $100. I'm stopping on the performance mods for a little bit and work on appearance mods for awhile after this.
When I go back to performance mods again I'll replace the throttle body with a larger one and maybe sell the TBS for a few bucks. By then maybe the price and selection of throttle bodies will be more numerous.
Can only spend the $$$ so fast because unfortunately I have other financial responsibilities also.
