Tell me about the 5sp auto...
I heard it is the same tranny that is in the explorers and rangers, the same one they hate. Or is this just a 4r70W with another gear?
I like the convienence of an auto but miss rowing my own.

If you had a Explorer with the 4.0L, you'd have the 5R55E, the V8 has the 5R55W. The Mustang uses the same tranny as the 2003 Thunderbird (without the Selec-Shift option on the Bird)-the 5R55S. The transmission seems to be very solid, IMHO.
The 5R55S (synchronous shift) transmission replaced the 5R55N in the 2003 model year for both the T-Bird and the Lincoln LS V8. The 5R55S is available with or without SST / Manumatic on the Lincoln and T-Bird – I think SST was a ~ $200 option on the Bird. It is bundles with the Sport option on the LS.
I owned a Y2K Lincoln LS with the previous (closely related) 5R55N and now drive a 2003 LS with the same (internally) trans. as the Mustang. Aside from a few reported solenoid pack replacements, it appears to be a very robust trans. I have had no mechanical issues in over 15,000 (um) enthusiastically driven miles on my 2003 – and over 40,000 on the Y2K.

Curious why SST / manumatic shifting was not even an option on the new Mustang at start-up / Job #1 . . .

I heard it is similar to the C3 transmission which uses an overdrive of first gear to make it into a 5-speed. The C3 was used behind 4- cylinder Mustangs. I doubt it is as strong overall as the 4R70W, but I have heard the solenoid issues were most-likely worked out before the Mustang was introduced.

That's not any family tree I would want any tranny behind a perfomance engine to be part of. :notnice: I will reserve further judgment until there are some stangs with serious power using them.
Thanks,

Is the Manumatic/Select Shift an option whereby you shift gears like a manual (just without a clutch)?
And if so, could such an option be retrofitted to the Mustang, for those (like SorryOccifer) who miss rowing through the gears...?

Retrofitting would likely be problematic, as no production version for the Mustang yet exists. I have seen Lincoln LS-s without the feature have it added, with parts from one that did have it. I expect that the (one) issue would be the interaction between the trans. control computer and the engine control computer, as the motor is quite different than the 3.9L V8s used in my Lincoln and the T-Bird.
But I still hope to see one from Ford in ’06.

Disappointed that this feature did not make it into the ’05 . . .
