I'm just curious...How many of you use synthetic oil? What brand? Do you change it yourself, and if you do, about how much money does it save you? What are the main advantages of synthetic oil?

I used the 5-20 full synthetic oil from Motorcraft.The idle is smoother and throttle responce improved,not much but noticible.The engine ran cooler by 5 degrees this last summer.There was no HP or MPG gain.I'm only using the Motorcraft brand until the warranty expires,I only pay the difference for sythetic due to free oil changes at the dealership.

Mobil 1...this is now the fifth car in 16 years and over 300k (yeah, I drive a lot)...2 Geos(we all have embarassing skeletons in our closets) a V6 Camaro (...sorry...) and 2 Mustangs....the Geos went 187k and 167k, the Camaro 170k. the spousal unit's Stang has 24k and my CS is closing in quick on that...like Poco mentioned, no huge lookie-here differences but you can tell things are a little smoother....

I use mobil one fully synthetic 5w-20. I pay about 35 bucks for 6 qts AND motorcraft oil filter. I change oil/filter every 5k miles. I do the change myself in about 20 mins if I remember the tools I need and I do it in the parking lot of my apt.

I went to mobil one to have it done once and paid 72 dollars, and I have paid in the past up to 50 for dino oil at mobil one. Walmart will do it for 50 with synthetic mobil one, but I have read bad things about having them do it so I just do it myself.

Just turned 16,000 miles on my car and am due for a change shortly (I only drive the car 8,500 a year, so I changes at 4,250 miles, 2 per year). I wanted to wait till I got over 15,000 miles to change to Mobil 1. Can't wait to see if I can notice the difference.

For another couple of days, Oreilly Auto Parts has Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic 5W30 FREE after rebate. I know it's not 5W20, but trust me it will be just fine for the GT or V6. I have run 5-30 for 20K miles in the past, and am going to be putting 5-30 back in this weekend when I change my oil. I'm no expert, but I know enough about oils to know that it will not hurt a thing, trust me.

$4.99/qt rebate up to 6 quarts. If you have an O'Reilly's in your area you should pick some up. Can't beat free, and it is just as good as Mobil1. Only valid until 11/20/07 though, so hurry up!!

Mobil 1 5w20 Motorcraft Filter Every 5K do it myself costs more but worth the added protection in my opinion. I buy the oil and filters at Wal Mart(Only thing I will go there for And struggle to do that) I buy the Gallon jugs two at a time and then get two Qt bottles. Cost is about 35.00 this way

I do the same thing as Richard, buying the Mobil 1 5W-20 5-qt jugs at Walmart (usually about $22), an extra qt ($5.99), and a Motorcraft filter. The only difference is that I change mine every 3K miles, because I do a good bit of city driving and short trips.

its worth it if you don't change it out to soon (before 8k miles) if your going to do 3 and 4k oil changes you should just use the cheap stuff.

Extended oil life is only one of the benefits of synthetic oil. Just because you opt to change your oil more frequently, doesn't mean you're not benefiting for synthetic oil. If that were the case, I'd have to go 2-3 years between oil changes.

I don't know about leaving oil sitting in a car for that long. There is a thread about this where metroplex and I thouroghly discuss the DETRIMENT of changing synthetic at 3000 miles.

I personally use M1 syn and change every 10k miles with a filter change every 5k.

Just switched to Amsoil 5-20. Put on the Ford racing oil filter and was wondering if the filter is only good for high speed racing by allowing the oil to flow quicker w/o screening the junk out. Looking for more info on that and it may make more sense to just use a Motorcraft filter. One things for sure - no more Fram!

Thanks for all of the replies. It seems that Mobil 1 is a popular choice. Why is that? Any other thoughts on the subject or brands of oil is appreciated. Thanks for helping educate a newbie.

If you check out some Mobil1 used oil analyses, there is a trend of high iron for some reason. Nobody really knows why that I can tell. I have been educating myself on oils for some time now and believe in the Pennzoil Platinum. Many people have been getting excellent results according to used oil analysis, even better than Mobil1.
