Swap Manual to Auto or buy new car?

Not sure if this is the right forum but there are alot of technicals here that i would need answered.

1: I have a 2007 GT 5 spd that I drive nothing but city and its starting to wear on me. The biggest issue is my knee. I've always had bad knees but at 28 it seems to be catching up to me. Driving a stick for the last 12 years is taking its toll.

2: The fact I'm driving city really does crap for mileage. City traffic in rush hour everyday just plain gets old.

3: I don't go to the drag strip very often or auto x more then maybe 5 - 7 times a year. So the performance benefit of a manual is pretty much null.

So the question is, which would be a better bang for buck? Trade in my leased 07 GT which I owe about 25.5k on (purchased last july for 27k) on a new 08/09 automatic GT or swap out the 5spd for a TR550 5 spd auto.

I love my car but I could also get a new 08/09 and transfer all my mods (kept all the original parts) but I know on trade I'll get raped. Probably end up taking a couple grand in roll over. So the question is, how much would it cost to go automatic. If its under 3-4k it might very well be worth it.

BTW, my car only has 8k miles on it.

IN MY OPINION, I WOULD JUST TRADE IT IN. A TRANNY SWAP IS NOT WORTH IT UNLESS YOU ARE A HARDCORE RACER AND UPGRADE TO SOMETHING STRONGER.

What's wrong with your knees? Getting them fixed might be a cheaper route than finding a new tranny :-P

You'd be surprised how much knee pain is usually contributed to muscle imbalances and overtight hip flexors. Sorry, not to take off on another topic.

But my other opinion is to just trade it in, maybe cut an even deal with a car that has a few more miles, but has a 5 spd.

Trade in for the auto. I've driven standards for the last 35 years (by choice). But traded my 06 Gt stick in for an 07 auto. I love the auto in this car!

Swapping manual to auto gets expensive....... swapping auto to manual is less expensive and much more common. I concur- trade it in.

Let me get this straight...
Did you say you leased it?
If so, you have to buy the car when the lease ends or put the manual back in.
Realistically if you switch trannys, do not even think about giving the car back at the end of the lease.
Am I on the right track here?

Trade it in and get a new model. Not worth the bucks to swap. The auto transmissions in these cars are great and with the proper tune are awesome.

Thumbs down

BEEN THERE DONE THAT!

Sell the 07 GT with the transmission you don't want and replace it with another 07/08/09 GT or with the transmission you do want.

There is almost zero up side to this swap aside from the experience/fun of doing it.

You will reduce the value of the 07 GT, while paying a pretty penny to do so. You will pay more for the swap than simply swapping cars will cost.

Do the swap - definitely the best option

(funny - I went the other way - sold my auto 05 to get the manual 06.... )

For the swap you'd need the complete engine/tranny portion of the wiring harness for sure along with an auto powertrain control module. Of course, the tranny, shifter, flex plate, oil cooler, tubing, hoses, pedal assembly, and a host of other parts. Not worth the effort including the fact it would have to go to a dealer to have the PATS system programmed.

I've done the first '05 and '07 auto to manual tranny swaps and have a lot of experience in this area. I wouldn't do it.

This is a very good point. When your lease is up, and let's say for whatever reason you do not want to buy the car, what would you do then?

That all depends on what auto tranny you go with. If you go with the stock auto, yeah you need all that. If you get a 4R70W you can run an independent controller and save the computer hassles. Plus the 4R70W is a better trans anyway.
