Still unsure about the Flowmaster Axle-backs

Hi everyone,

I love the Flowmaster sound, and from what I gather the phantom "drone" inside the car is nonexistent. I just cant decide because the mufflers are Black and my car is Silver,,,, thinking it would look a bit silly.

- Anyone have these on a silver stang. If so,, please provide pics of how it looks out back.

THANKS

You could paint the mufflers silver.

I have them on a sliver 05. Don't have a pic at this moment. The black of the muffler blends in with the under carriage of the car. Looks fine. I'll try to get a pick for you later.

You can't really see the black part anyway, unless you're kneeling down. Those 4" tips would look sweet against silver!

BTW, I do have a good bit of drone, mainly in the 1500-2000 rpm range. It really isn't bad, I've gotten used to it, and my passengers haven't complained. Also, I installed some dynamat under the rear seat last weekend, and it quieted down the drone a bit.......

I have a 5 spd and @ 2k RPM and above, no drone. I do suspect that an auto, where you can't pick the gear there may be some drone.

I installed headers w/no cats and an X pipe and no drone anywhere and is actually quiter at cruise. At WOT it is considerably louder..... but no drone.

Forgive the size, I took these with my DSLR but if you look at the first photo, you can see generally what the tips/mufflers look like in comparison to the red V6 Mustang parked in front of me at the next house. Basically the black mufflers make the look of the metal mufflers disappear and blend in with the darkness/shadows under the car, so that your tips stand out more. It looks really neat if you ask me.

The sound will sound rough when you first put them on. But they sound VERY nice after about 1-2 weeks. The drone sound is noticeable at the very bottom of your cruising RPMs, which is around 1200-2400rpm, but that shouldnt be a problem unless you're constantly lugging your car.

The only issue I know of is the broken baffles. Mine just broke sometime in the last 2-3 weeks and I've had them since November. I'm thinking the off-road pipe didn't help that much.

Hey Donna,
What rattling issue? Do you mean the rattling sound when you first fire it up and it sounds like something is rumbling inside the muffler?

Take a rubber mallet (or your fist) and lightly rap the bottom of the muffler. If you hear a rattling noise then your baffle has busted loose. Notify Flowmaster and they will get you a new set. If they don't rattle then you are fine.
I have had mine on since around late March early April with no issues at all.

afeldv8, look up in this thread in Donna's post, she posted a picture of her GT with the Flowmasters, her car is Silver.

OKCMustangGT, thanks for the tip, I'll check it out when I get home. I know when it first started, my muffler was just not tightened on one bolt, and that fixed it.

I have had my Flows since March. I am very happy with them. The drone is not too bad, I think I am used to it. I love the way they sound. They do sound better with time. Now if I just keep my foot off the gas, I might save some money.

Does anyone out there have the top of the left side muffler hitting the rear-most bracket on that side? I do, there is contact when I go over rutted/bumpy roads or railroad tracks. The left side tip extends out a half-inch further than the right. If I could just move the whole assembly back that half-inch the muffler would clear the bracket. As it stands right now, I can stick my index finger in there but thats it. Plenty of clearance on the right. Any ideas?

Jon

Reminisce is right. The black mufflers do help the tips to stand out. My first set of flow's started rattling after 4000 miles, got them replaced, no problem. I have an O/R X-pipe, no cats, stock exhaust manifolds, and Flowmaster Axle-backs. There is a drone at highway speeds, around 60-90 mph, getting progressively louder with higher speeds/rpm's. The drone fades at around 95-100 mph. To me, the drone is definitely worth it, especially when you go through tunnels and bridge overpasses!!

Yeah dude you're just not going to see the black mufflers at all which is the point. Unless you're laying on the ground or looking for them you just don't see them, just the nice tips.

No drone to speak of here. If I'm lugging a bit it does do it a little but that's typically when I get stuck puttering along due to traffic. Outside of that they sound fantastic and the drone doesn't happen enough to be a bother. Where it's a PITA to get is on the highway which these are great, at highway speed very little cabin noise if any to speak of when the stereo is on and they sound fantastic when you jam on the gas.

Gray is the best I can do for ya.
Mine have just started to rattle, but I just went out there and crawled under and hit them a few times, I think I just need to tighten a clamp. But will pull it in the shop tomorrow raise it up with someone in it working the RPM's so I can tell If I have a baffle issue.

It's probably just me, but I really hated the way the flowmaster (and other aftermarket mufflers) had the huge chrome tips, even worse was the big rolled edges on the end of the tips. I had a shop cut my stock tips off, and weld them onto the flowmaster mufflers, the chop the tips back a bit (at first they stuck out pretty far). Looks pretty **** clean. I like the simple cut metal pipe look, I don't like the gawdy chrome look.

I haven't noticed much drone, no more than any of my previous V8 cars with aftermarket exhaust anyway.

To be honest, I was expecting the flowmasters to be a bit louder (I remember flowmaster 40's on my old camaro, they were quite a bit louder, but then again I had headers and no cats). I wouldn't mind them being a bit louder, but I do like the tone.

any excuse to let folks know you got a nice new camera, ay? what camera you have has no bearing on how you compress or don't compress you images for the web. ;-) 1/2 a meg is way to big for a web sized image, 40-80kb is more like it.

OKC, I checked and it seems like my mufflers MAY be ok.. I put the car up on the ramps last night and checked everything, seems my muffler wasnt pushed all the way in to the pipe and was rattling a bit. I Still couldnt get it solid to the tee, but its tighter and the rattle seemed to disappear, we'll see if it loosens again soon, I may just pull it off and do it again.

EDIT: Just saw the post above is addressed to me, and to reference that, no ... I'm a photographer just like you. Those pics were that size because I used them on a photography forum before I completely processed them. However, to play devil's advocate, I've seen many a picture on this very forum that have been around that size embedded, and this is the first public concern I've seen attack the subject openly. In any event, I apologize if the file size bothered anyone else.
