Stalled out again. What do I check?

My car stalls out on occasion, and it's only when I press the clutch, and only when I've been shopping (starting and turning off the car several times). When it does it, you just press in the clutch, and the RPM's IMMEDIATELY plummet to nothing and the car stalls. It's a ***** to turn when the power steering quits and you didn't hear it die (the radio continues to work and the all electrical accessories). I'll schedule an appointment at a dealership this next week, but what should I look for in the meantime? IAC, throttle motor, PCM maybe?

Try cleaning your throttle body...... I was just reading a thread somewhere about that and it described the symptoms you mention.

Sounds like the Throttle Body is dirty. Easy fix, just remove the air intake tube, and the throttle body by taking out the 4 screws. Work the butterflys open and closed and wipe out any gunk you find with a clean cloth. Some use TB cleaner, I didn't and the gunk wipes off fairly easy. If you use any cleaner, do NOT use carb or brake cleaner. They can damage the TB, since it has a coating of some sort on the surface, and that stuff can strip off the coating.

Now THAT's one I didn't expect. The dealership is only about 100 yards from where I work, so I'll stop by there in the morning- if it needs cleaned, they can do it under warranty What is this TSB you speak of, so I can be prepared when I go in?

+1 To all of the above. I just cleaned mine yesterday, and here are a couple of pics of what came out. This is at 15K miles. I was having an issue with sporatic idle, especially with the AC blowing...That problem is gone. Also, seems much smoother when leaving in 1st gear. Before this, it seemed very, very touchy / jerky. I was getting ready to call my tuner, but that has now disappeared as well.....

Invest in the 3 bucks for a can of cleaner...Takes all of about 20 minutes...

Mike

OK, so the site won't let me post pics. I will edit and ad when the site is fixed....

Well, maybe I don't suck at manual as much as I thought. I cannot seem to smoothly take off, and this just may be the issue. Cool. I'll print this thread in the morning, along with the TSB (if I can find it) before I go to the dealership. If tehy won't help me, I'll do it myself. Thanks, fellas.

Infinity,
I believe I am incorrect about the TSB for this problem. I went to look for it and can only find the one about the bad COPS (coil on plug) causing rough idle and hesitation. This must be the one I was thinking of. Sorry to lead you the wrong way. But I still believe your issue is a gummed up throttle body.

Well, there was a bunch of nastiness in the TB behind the butterflies. What is it? I cleaned it all out with a clean, dry towel, and I took it for a spin. It does feel just a bit different.

Is the idle any better? I noticed an immediate improvement in my idle after I cleaned mine.

I'll update in the morning- I didn't drive enough to tell, just to make sure it ran. I work nights, so I'll find out in a few hours. Hopefully it'll smooth things out. Mine's been a bit rough since new, and I figured that was normal.

Whoa! The car runs better now than I remember it ever running. It shifts smoother and over all just feels better. I wish I'd known about the gum in the TB sooner.

I'm going to have to do that to mine too, it's a bit jerky on cold start moving away from a stop. Sounds like cleaning the throttle body every 10-15k or so is a wise idea.

I would just try and wipe it with a damp rag first. That is what I did and with a little hard rubbing, the gunk all came off with not too much problems. I didn't need to use any solvents at all.

Oil and fuel deposits. One misconception is the air only flows one way thru the manifold. There is actually a pressure wave that runs in reverse thru the inlet. This is called reversion.
