Question Should I go with the S/C or cam and head work or crate engine?

Ok, unless I missed something the next leap in Performance is one of the three:

Supercharger Paxton, Vortec cost: starting at 3600.00 upwards
Roush, Saleen, Whipple: starting at 5000.00 upwards

Cam/Headwork Blow by racing stage 2 cams and heads: 2700.00
Bama Chips Comp cams without tune 1150.00
Can anyone suggest someone else?

Crate engines: Ford Racing 302 CID 345 HP 3400.00
347 CID 450 HP 6600.00

I included the crate engines just for a price comparison. Which did you chose or might choose and why? I am between the Vortec and a cam and head setup. I love the lope of a cam'd engine. BLow by quotes a RWHP of 375~385. Blowers claim 420-500 HP.

Your thoughts:

First, I say stay away from BBR...

Second, a crate motor swap into these computer controlled cars would be an adventure to say the least.

Third, you don't say what type of driving/performance you are planning on doing, so it would be hard to recommend a type of blower for you.

Finally, if you are looking for P&P heads, check out Livernois. That's where I got mine. They have Stage 1 and Stage 2 (which includes upgraded +1mm Manley valves)... I think both include new springs. I bought the Stage 2 version.

Because of their history and reputation... which aren't very good. Lots of claims and promises, but very little proof or results (if any).

Why did you choose the KB over other screw type? I like the lower boost pressure (think the motor will as well). But the cost is a lot more and no chance for a intercooler.

that is true what don said..... BUT they have been excellent and very helpful to me, and my cams and stuff will be here in 2 weeks.... you can wait and see how my overall experience with them was if you want. I will keep everybody posted.

The thread over at modfords from a while ago that caused all the uproar.... they did handle themselves VERY poorly, and after seeing that I decided not to do business with them. However, they are the only ones with cams that fit my needs ready to go. Comp wont grind to the specs I want, so thats not an option. I am gonna make a huge thread on all my findings in the cam and head department very soon here. but anyway, Chris at blow by has been VERY helpful, and has done the cam/head install several times himself. I have been very happy so far.

Also, if you are going with them for power.... maybe dont. Comp cams will net you the most power, but they wont be nearly as lumpy sounding. Details on that in my huge thread, but even their 350 cams arent close to the lump of the stage 2 BBRs, but for good reason in the power department. I am not buying cams for power, I am getting them solely for the sound, and BBR has the sound I want.

The KB has an intercooler... a very good one frankly. And when I got it, it actually cost me less than I would have paid for a Saleen. If you get a Saleen SC, the kit is not complete to run 8psi or more... you have to buy other stuff (injectors, MAF, etc.). So, that adds onto the cost. The KB 8psi kit is 100% complete... 39# injectors, CAI, SCT tuner, BAP, even a new 160deg thermostat. Plus, I like the fact that the air filter is no longer in the engine bay where all the heat is... it's under the bumper sucking true cold air. Finally, I knew I could get the Shaker scoop to fit with the KB, and it wouldn't fit with the Saleen.

I believe perhaps the most prudent path to hotrodding these cars is to build the bottom end of the motor with forged internals before installing any kind of power adder. That being said many of us have kept them alive for a long time through safe tunes and prudent operation. If you want 400+ rwhp a power adder is so far the only way to go. I've yet to see anyone make over 400 with these motors naturally aspirated. Not saying it can't be done just haven't personally seen one yet.

Heads and cams...that will make me happy. Only beacuse I'm not into the s/c that much (I dunno why). I'm saving for them right now, and that's my vote.

Ultimate goal is an engine built by ME! But that's a long way down the road.
