I am having my 4.10 gears installed today and then the vehicle will be put on the dyno. My performance mods are done for now. Will let you know the results.

PS: I am a qualified technician, been associated with or worked directly for a Caterpillar dealer for 20+ years in a Tech 1 capacity prior to becoming Service Manager. I am paying someone to install my gears. Yes I could do it myself, but I would rather have someone do the install that does several installations of gear sets each week. The cost for labor is only $250.00. I think it is money well spent! I am installing a FRPP gear set.

132.99 Shipped is a great deal. Is there any difference between the Motives and FRPP gears?

Installing gears is NOT a NO BRAINER. I paid $150 at a local hot rod shop for the install when he was replacing the springs and installing lower control arms.

I have 2 friends that I know that are fully capable of doing the install. I could probably do it myself, but want to have someone that has done a gear swap before handle the install.

I thought so too.
I google'd the Internet for "motive performance plus gears" and also "motive gear whine" and couldn't find anything negative. MustangTuning claims they're as good as FRPP. That's all I know...

Gears are all in the install. If backlash and other critical specs are not right, they WILL make noise. Most people around here go for FRPP because they have the best reputation as "quiet" gears. The Motive sets are fine, IF you get them installed by a competent mechanic.

Good Luck, you'll love the 4.10s!

For the V6 with 7.5" Rear, you have a choice of 3.73 or 4.10 Motive gears and they're 159.99 at www.mustangtuning.com.
I don't know if FRPP makes them for 7.5".

I would say you'd get substantial improvement in acceleration.

Are you concerned with engine rpm's at highway speeds?

Yes, you'll get better acceleration, but the V6 doesn't really have the free-breathing RPM range the V8 does. I probably would not go more than 3.73 in that car.

I'm not sure what you mean by "free breathing RPM range"...the V6 redline is over 6000, isn't it?

I still tend to agree on 3.73 but more so because the automatic, and the V6 manual, start out with 3.31 in the rear. Only the GT manual has 3.55. Also, the auto's 5th gear is .71 versus the manual's .68.

flight96, Go to http://www.f-body.org/gears/ and plop the numbers in for the V6 (Tire: 215/65SR16, Axle Ratio: 3.31, Redline: 6100, First Gear: 3.22, Second Gear: 2.29, Third Gear: 1.54, Fourth Gear: 1, Fifth Gear: .71) and Calculate. Then change the Axle Ratio to 3.73, recalculate and then 4.10.
EDIT: never mind, I did it for you. See the attached Excel spreadsheet!

Basically, at highway speeds of roughly 65, 75 and 85, the RPMs for 3.31, 3.73 and 4.10 are approximately:
65 mph: 1900, 2100, 2400
75 mph: 2200, 2500, 2700
85 mph: 2500, 2800, 3100

If you cruise at 75 very much, think about whether you want your tach showing 2700 rpm or not!

I'm still considering 3.73 (not really) or 3.90 for mine, rather than 4.10. I looked at 3.73 and thought, why bother? So I start looking at 3.90s. But then 4.10's keep tempting me. Only about 100~250 rpm more than 3.90 at cruise speeds (65-80) plus they're $20 cheaper! But they're 400+ rpm more than 3.55. So I go back to 3.90...

3.55, 80 mph: 2400 rpm
3.73, 80 mph: 2500 rpm
3.90, 79 mph: 2600 rpm
4.10, 78 mph: 2800 rpm

I've got the order form all filled out for Motive 4.10's...Somebody tell me to click Submit!

If you are doing a lot of freeway driving, as the original poster is, your engine is churning up pretty high on an everyday basis. But following the logic of this thread, remember that 5.13's will only increase your rpm's a few hundred over 4.88's also.

SHould you get the install kit if someone else is installing them? Or is it best to let them take care of that?

And how are you guys finding shops to install gears for $200 and under? The cheapest I found was $390 (90% of the shops I called either don't install gears or "don't wanna fool with them"). One guy says he does them all the time, but charges over $600. What gives? Anyone in Louisiana know of a shop that does them for cheaper then $300?

I am just about ready to pull the trigger myself. I am going to get them profesionally installed, which I was quoted 150. Does 150 sound fair for an install?

Yeah, but in addition to paying for the mods, I also have to pay for the gas to have fun with!
I'm averaging 2000 km/month and at 15L/100km that's 300 liters per month.
Back in November, 87 octane was .70/liter ($210/mth).
Now 87 is $1.05 ($315/mth).
I'll be doing my mods soon including a Predator tune so I'll have to switch to 91 which is $1.17.
Now I'm looking at $351/mth.
Even if I can keep my foot out of it and get 14 or even 13.5 L/100KM, that's still $315.90

So you like your Motive's? That's good to hear...

Sounds pretty cheap to me! I hope they know what they're doing.

I am having a guy whom works at my friends performance shop do it on the weekend. He has done a few Mustangs before and all have come out perfectly. I have no qualms about him installing it, since my friend had him install them and they work great.

Im still on the fence about which ratio to go with for the V6 Auto... I don't do alot of highway driving so Im leaning toward the 4.10's....Im not too sure if going with 3.73 would be much different than whats in there now 3.90's would be nice If I could find them for the 7.5" rear-end.

$600 bucks. Robbery for sure. $150--250 is about the going rate. You can go to your dealer and purchase Ford racing gears and have them install them. They would be under warranty just like the rest of the car. You will have to go to them to flash the computer to correct speedometer after the install. Yes purchase install kit too. Like I said this is not a no brainier.
