Can anyone tell me what kind of gains you are supposed to get with an 87 octane tune with both the Xcal and Predator? How much of a difference is there between the 87, 89, and 91 tunes? Mind you I am talking about tunes with no aftermarket bolt-ons whatsoever. Most everyone I have seen through searching has had additional stuff. I really just want to know what the tunes alone get you.

Maybe you can forge on and become the source of this info? If no one has done it yet, you can have a small amount of fame.

not trying to hijack your thread, but how much power would it add with the K&N intake and an 87 tune. I don't want to have to pay more for gas than I already have too.

As a follow up, I installed the Predator 91 tune, filled with 91 octane 3 or 4 times. Kept getting detonation no matter what I did. Even backed the timing down 2 degrees. A guy around town here and I hooked up to do the gear swap to 4:10's, and he was telling me that he would bet that the detonation was causing my computer to back down the power to get rid of the pinging. After the gear swap, I updated the tune to accomodate the 4:10's, and went ahead and flashed it back to 87. Now I know you shouldn't do 2 things at once, but the motor sounds much stronger at 87. Again, bad gas around here or something, but besides the 4:10's, I'm much happier with the 87 tune.

Yeah, I'm getting a predator and C/L, and I want to run JUST 87
I know i'll get more gains from the 91 and 93 tune, but with it being the difference between 87(for 87) and 97(91) cents for gas....I'd like to keep 87

I've now started getting it too, Sean. I was fine before the 105+ temps started, but the heat will do that too. I'm going to use this opportunity to update to the latest Diablo 91 Octane tune this coming weekend and leave the timing alone and see where I'm at.

Darn oven heat, and it was running so good

I originally had a 93 Octane SCT tune for all my mods, and then recently switched over to the 87 octane version to save some money on gas. I felt no loss in power. Maybe I lost a little, but it would be under 5, since I couldn't feel it at all.

Just next door here in the desert I can still find it for $2.39, but it's on the rise again.

I can get 93 octane for $2.29 right now, and 87 for $2.09. Just the other day, 87 was $1.97. And I thought that was high.

hey,

I'm glad you asked this question, because now I am kind of confused. I thought that a tune alone would yield considerable gains, but I was told recently by a local shop owner that a tune alone won't do much. Can someone please clear this up?

A tune alone should get you 15-20HP, and should get you better MPG... as well as helping with throttle response and disabling the speed limiter, etc. But IMO it's not worth the $300+ for the tuner if that will be your only mod. The great thing about a tuner is it will get you the most out of all your other mods. So, ultimately a tuner can get you much more than just 15-20HP, by getting you an extra 5-10HP from any future mods. Some mods that you do can actually cost you HP until you flash the computer to recognize it.

thanks, Acadian.

I'm getting some axle-back Magnaflows put on tonight. I don't need a tune for that, do I?

Nope, you shouldn't. Magnaflow axlebacks were the first mod that I did, and I didn't get the SCT until about 3-4 months later. And I had no CEL because of it. But, I'm sure getting the XCalibrator will help you get all the available power from the Magnaflows. Without a tune, I wouldn't expect to get more than 5HP from the axleback, where with a tune you might get closer to 10. But I'm sure you didn't get them for the HP. I know I got mine for the sound and especially the look.
