with my discussion here I've just been sticking to apples to apples - factory GT tune and factory B tune.

First I stared with the car completely stock with the stock airbox and stock tune and made a surprising 269 rwhp and 285 rwtq, this is actually a little high but for a stock tune it is what it is. Most make 260-265rwhp and 280-285 rwtq.
Next I installed the Bullitt intake and my high octane tune adjustments and set the a/f around 12.7-12.9 and it made 280 rwhp and 305 rwtq at best, it made a few lower Hp numbers but these are the best.
Finally I reinstalled the C&L Racer intake and used the EXACT same tune as far as spark timing and commanded a/f goes and we made 288 rwhp and 308 rwtq.

tbone got a wrench up his butt. Nobody claimed the CAI made 50hp - but he argued they didn't do much of anything. I stood on 15hp with Bullitt's CAI.
I said this and he didn't comment but went on arguing:
estimates:
CAI = 15HP
Tune (nonFRPP) = 10-25HP
Cams = 30HP
Ported Heads = 20HP?
Longtubes/Xpipe = 30HP?
Intake/throttle body/injectors = 30HP?
All of the above in combination =
A proper CAI with tune for A/F is less money and less involved than any other thing on the list.

iirc he argued against this too - that the cai changed a/f
Sure enough wtih the stock airbox and tune it went rich down to the high 11's and low 12's like normal. When I installed the Bullitt airbox it went lean, very very lean, in the mid to high 14's. Yes, this intake requires a tune.
A CAI may change the turbulence in the MAF. My tuner had to spin my MAF sensor tube a few different times until it read correctly. Then he marked the position with white marks just in case I ever removed it. Took him a few tries to find a good position for the sensor to read correctly. I'm pretty sure this would have taken care of a lot of that problem also.
Even if it was manufactured as an assembly with the cai?
I'd like to understand this stuff better.
Thought it was interesting how you said the O2's were mostly about protecting the cats.

Unless it comes as a set with line up marks, the turbulence will be totally different in that air tube at certain points. Those funny looking stock air tubes are designed the way they are not just to be flexible. Turbulence helps the MAF read correctly. CAI cuts way down on Turbulence and a straight shot CAI tube will have much less which will be hard for the MAF to read anything.
If the open element CAI didn't add any hp - the tune did it all, then Ford should have just said that. Because no doubt the open element adds to the exhaust tone they were trying to mimic from the movie soundtrack - plus baffles, plus unique h-pipe, plus GTB's, plus packed tips.
It definitely provides two different tones. At idle and above it has that nice mellow glass pack sound like the GT390 in the movie. But above 4k - esp above 5, when you go on and off throttle, it sounds more like the GT40 dubbed in when he was chasing the Charger. Maybe the open element was all about the tone and not about hp?

If yours does have baffles inside, I'm guessing that was designed to help the MAF read correctly. The larger tube and open filter will help the sound and allow less restriction. Colder air is always a plus too.
they hang down below the tube and between the maf and throttle body. some guys took em off and plugged the holes and said they couldn't tell any difference in sound.

I had to clock my MAf also in the end I changed the elbow to a different design ( the bend wasn't has tight and short going into the MAF ) and it fixed my issue and I was able to put it back to stock location. wow this thread is still going. 20 hp
