Questions about '05 Auto Trans
#1
I need to do some research for a friend of mine. He bought my '65 Fastback and is going to put in an '03 Mach 1 motor and a '01 Cobra IRS w/ a roots blower. He wants to put in an auto trans so I recomended the '05 trans since it is a 5-speed.
Will this work? What is he going to need as far as electronics? I assume it will handle 450 hp. What about pulling one out of another Ford? I know the Lincoln LS is also a 5-speed. Is it the same?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not much is known about these Auto's, and supposedly have some weak points making 450hp a questionable prospect. I'd stay away from it for that project.
Go with a previous 4 speed built by Lenco or Performance Automatic. That way he know's he'll have a car that can take serious HP if he decides to mod it more.

Not off the top of my head, and forget about Lenco, I misspoke, they're all out racing transmissions. I can't for the life of me think of the other company I had in mind.
Performance Automatic is on the money. The Tranny you're probably going to want look into is an AODE like this one:

While I really like the preformance and shifting capabilities of the new 5 speed auto.
I would definately not put the 05 auto in that car. The auto is fully computerized and matched specifically to the engine computer. I think it would be very difficult to get this trans to work properly with an older engine....
Heck, I only know of one tuner ( Alternative Auto ) that has made significant improvements to the auto shift patterns. All other tuners I have talked to seem to have that "well....." pause when you aske them about twiking the auto....
I think that you would be much better off with a custom built C4....

I let him know what everyone said and he'll be going with the pre-'05 auto trans.
Thanks, everybody. Since this used to be my car (for 16 years!), I want it to turn out really good.

The 5R55S trannie in the 05 Mustang is the same trannie that is used in the 2003 - 2006 Lincoln LS and the 2003 - 2005 T-Bird. It is also used in some Ford SUVs.
You will have a problem with the 5R55S trannie.
1. It is computer controlled by the PCM in the 05. No computer = No shifts
2. I was told by a Ford trannie engineer that 350 lb ft of torque was the max for the 5R55S. (it's not HP that is important its torque).

That IRS conversion is going to be a lot of work & if he plans on drag racing it may not be the optimum setup. If it was me I would keep the live axle & put coil over shocks all around. The last MMFF with the 2 silver Stangs on the cover has a fellow with a Cobra that installed a live axle & auto. He is running 10's. My .02
