question: overdrive on the highway...
#1
not sure of the answer, so please have some patience...
lets say I'm doing about 50 or 60mph on the highway and O/D is on.
I decide to turn O/D off (the infamous pinky click) and gun it to pass some slowbie.
I kick it to about 5500 rpm to pass and turn o/d back on...
is it bad for my 5r55s in the long term to do this?

Does the 5r55s not shift down a gear by itself fast enough to pass, or do you feel you get better response from taking it out of overdrive? Either way it should drop down to 3rd to pass, so I can't see how taking taking if from 5th to 4th by the button, and then giving it gas to downshift to 3rd to pass would help. Unless you just enjoy pressing the button.

I forgot to mention that I am running 3.90 gears...maybe that plays a part.
to answer your question - yes, it feels more responsive pressing the button. I dont know if it is fact or not, but it certainly feels like it pulls harder from about 3.8k than it does at 2.8k

I tried turning the OD off and it definately is more responsive when making a pass on the highway. Is it bad to turn OD off and on? Never got an answer. How about others out there. Have you tired this and how do you use the OD?

Not bad. You're simply forcing a downshift. Of course, once you roll into the throttle it'll likely downshift to 3rd anyway. Technically you shouldn't need to do it at all. It'll take care of the downshifting for you.

This is fine. You are doing nothing that will harm the transmission. I do this all the time and have done so for years in my F-150. Doing it manually like this is much faster than waiting for the car to respond on it's own based on pushing the gas pedal.

I click off the OD button below 60 on the freeway all the time. If I jab the gas to speed around someone it will often jump down two gears, into third and sound like I'm trying to be a jerk or showing off. It shouldn't be a problem, but I'm in no way a mechanic. The trans is designed to be shifted manually if you desire, although the set up isn't very good for this, other wise if you put in in 3, it would cycle from 1st to third rather than just lock into 3rd. This is what I base my opinion on, that it shouldn't damage the trans at all.

Yes I know but you have to always assume that people do not understand that or take what you say literally and might try that at 90MPH Always assume you are dealing with someone who may not have a clue.

They're designed not to let you do something stupid. If you have a manual, you shouldnt be able to shift into like 1st at 100, you know? Using the OD button should be fine, we used it all the time when vacationing in the mountains. Where exactly is it in the car, pics? I dont want a auto, but I'd like to see it anyway.
